your last comment just made me realize you are using a laptop and hence hard coding your router's address is not a good idea since you may go to a friend's network or a public wifi and things may break since they will probably be using a different default address.

Can you change that ping line to this one? This one will check the gateway address on its own and hence is more resilient to change.

while [ 1 ] ; do a=( `route -n | tail -n 1` ) ; ping -c 1 ${a[1]} 2>/dev/null 1>&2 ; sleep 30 ; done   &

I still don't know if the slot is faulty

I em·pa·thize with you....i have a nice dual core (to fix) TOSHIBA sattelite with a broken dvdplayer and usb ports....!

The particular dvd rom is special and proprietary to fit in the unit. Angry

So for the moment i cannot use it with PCLOS- it has VISTA on it which works, but hav'nt tested it with WI-FI yet.

muungwana  is correct with this, bj.....it may be peachy at your residence WI-FI, but venturing abroad there are different ADDRESSES.... Undecided

muungwana has gone that EXTRA MILE for you, and this can and probably will help others with the same USB chipset....Thank you muungwana!

-He has. A recurrent theme in this Forum is how its members support and share above and beyond the call of merely imparting knowledge. It has been evident in my research on this dongle and its like that the forums of other distro's that have fielded questions on set-up of AR5523 chipset USB things are far inferior in "friendly" compared to ours. IMHO. And except for one or two instances where I have done something completely loopy and sought help, and the Forum have sat and scratched its collective heads in wonderment, I have been fortunate to receive patient and comprehensive assistance that has solved my problem and taught me much. I keep refering to it and it is a shame that it has been archived, but Joble's epic 31/2 page sort-out of the initial install must rank high on the All-Star list. It is unlikely that anyone else will have a working example of this dongle plumbed up to a PCLinuxOS box but the knowledge Muungwana has imparted will be portable and useful to many.

Muungwana: rc.local has been modified and now I need to go find a coffee shop with a connection to try it out. Might post a PM once done, just to close off. Meanwhile; High Five, job well done. You, sir, are a legend.

JNibski:  Wink Good luck with the Tosh! Nice bit 'o gear.

thank you guys for acknowledging my contributions to the forum, just doing my small part in making linux a viable option for the majority of computer users who are sadly still totally ignorant of its existence.
