Some recent hardware issues have brought me to the conclusion that it is finally time to build a new box.  I'm looking at an I5 2500K (Sandy Bridge) processor and a Z68 north bridge motherboard.  If I don't put a video card in this box, can PCLOS run the video directly from the processor?  I found a couple of threads that hinted that it could be done, but didn't find anyone that said that they had done it.

There are a couple of clues.
  • Lack of responses on this thread suggest that even if it works, it is really out on the bleeding edge.
  • There aren't any obvious choices under "Configure your video card" to set this up.

I don't think I can wait until Wednesday to order the new parts.  I want my new toys nowGrin  I'll just put a video card in it to make sure it works.

Thanks for your reply and good luck with the new toys.

I have been watching this thread for responses .....  but

dlb,
I am unsure if you have tried the on chip video or not ..... can you clarify please?  If you tried it what went wrong?

AFAIK, Sandy Bridge graphics is fully supported in kernel 2.6.38.

Just10, I have not tried this yet.  I'm trying to do my homework before I buy the parts for the new box.  It looks like jimz360 will get to test it first.  Smiley

I don't recall any of the testers trying this with the newer kernels, but I don't pay close enough attention to their hardware configurations to be sure.

OK, and the answer is ...

The system does work without the video card, using just the i5 processor and the Z68 north bridge.  It uses the Vesa driver, so the initial resolution was comically low.  I set the resolution to "Automatic" in Control Center and it gave respectable resolution.  I didn't have an internet connection then, so I couldn't do a lot of testing.  This was with both PCLOS 2011.06 installed and Live Disk.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.
