This is an issue that has hit me at least 5 times now and it started back like 3-4 months ago. But it wasnt always like this since the 1st upgrade to KDE4. And the 1st few following updates. Currently I am on PCLOS KDE 4.6.4

The problem is that every so very often when I trigger the "desktop grid" effect. Especially to quickly whisk from 1 desktop to another(doing alot of fast-paced production stuff). The "finger icon cursor" that usually comes up will not go away. Usually once you zoom out to your desktops. The finger icon replaces the normal arrow icon. And once you pick which desktop you wish to go to. It converts back into the normal arrow cursor.

Well there are cases where this will not happen. And the finger cursor will not swap back to the normal arrow one. Its an issue because while its like that. You cannot DO ANYTHING! You cant select anything. Interact with any of your open windows. Access any other effects or even bring up the kicker bar. So Im posting this to see if anyone else has ever had this issue and if theres a way to correct it when it happens.

I know I shouldve said something about this months ago when it 1st started happening. But to be honest. I had not 1 clue how to even explain it. As I know alot of you here prefer "cold hard facts & data" to back up claims of issues. I just really didnt know how to even get such stuff up for you to see for something like this. But despite that. I am really hoping someone might have a clue what this is and how to work around it. Besides just permanently disabling desktop grid. As I find it quite useful beyond just "eye candy".

Thanks

I have not encountered this issue before and I always use Desktop Grid the way you also meant to use it. So just a few questions and probably and experiment for you.

How many virtual desktops do (you have setup and) the grid presents? Are you using the default key combination or by any other means (like Screen Edges perhaps)? Have you tried it as another newly-created user? What display adapter do you have, and its memory?

I only use 4 virtual desktops and I trigger it by moving the cursor to the top-left corner of the screen.

The reasons for the questions and the experiment are: (1) perhaps the graphic card's render of the effect/feature (too many virtual desktops or even a memory leak), or (2) a corrupted configuration, or (3) conflicts in key-combos, etc.

Hi Archie,

Im using a PCIe Nvidia 7600GT with 256mb DDR2 ram.

My setup is 4 screens and its triggered by moving the cursor to the tip top center of the screen. Nothing more beyond that. As I really try not to get too in detail with those configurations. as I only activate what I actually make use of for high speed jumping back n' forth between screens & jobs.

If you create a temporary new user and enable the same effect, does it have the same issue as your current, working session?

I couldnt say. As this issue doesnt happen ON DEMAND or at a set "condition". Least that I noticed. It just happens. As wierd as that sounds. Best I can do is create another user and try it to see what happens. And I'll get back to you on it.

But Im still wondering about IF there is a means to "cancel" it out if it ever happened again. Without having to flatout reboot the whole PC.

I have had this issue as well but can not duplicate it with a new user set up.  NVidea integrated.

Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work?

Play with the Grid on the new user account for a bit. It is a probability that in the time you've made changes or even in updates, maybe a misconfiguration or a file corruption had occurred.

Sorry for drudging this back up after so long. But, I believe I resolved it and will close this post.

I sped of the duration time for the animation. I had to keep playing with it a bit. And it seems making it FASTER was what keeps preventing it from messing up on me. Thanks to those that submitted ideas and mods, I'll be closing this post now.

Thank You
