ok i have installed the newest kde release of pclos. basically none of the desktop effects work. i enabled a check on all of em and most of em come up in kwin manager saying that it couldnt enable them. i had no problem on pclos 2010.12.

My hardware setup is a Asrock1333-fullhd, pentium d 930,2(512mb) ddr 533(266-333mhz),seagate barracuda 40gb. no video card Sad just allocating 128mb of ram for video.

need hints on what could be going wrong.

Tye,
Hello, there should be some kind of integrated video chip on your motherboard otherwise you would not even have a graphical desktop.  Go to Configure your Computer >> Hardware >> Browse & Configure Hardware >> Videocard (dropdown) >> Click the card name and report back your videocard name & current driver module in use (under Misc.).

Have you seen this? >> http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,92926.0.html

That may help you, otherwise report back.  If you search in the xorg-migration section there may also be other solutions.  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/board,77.0.html

If nothing pans out after trying omskates post, you could possibly try changing the Compositing Type from OpenGL to XRender

I recently installed 2011.6 on my system and exactly same problem ensued which was only rectified once I installed the proprietary drivers for the card.  I have a Sapphire HD4890 (ATI) card.  I also noted that the system identified the card slightly wrong - it picked it as a 4890 and not a hd4890.  Until I corrected that part it was still playing about.  I then set it with OpenGL for render  and away it all went.

Using the default drivers the only way I could get any desktop effects to work was to change from OpenGL to XRender and then it would only allow a few effects but nothing like the Cube or anything too decent.  Not sure it this helps anyone but if you do happen to have later ATI card and having issues then first of all see if the system is identifying the card correctly and then if still an issue go for the proprietary drivers.

 Embarrassed
I think I have the very same problem
I decided to give my system an upgrade yesterday (rather delayed)
and today I am with NO 3D!!!!!
I have this on board

Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (Intel GMA X4500) supporting DX10 technology and maximum shared memory up to 1759MB.

as soon  as I ran install all updates

  • compiz is not enabled in control center
  • I installed task-3ddesktop!!! still nothing!
  • and kde control center notifies that it cannot activate "it's" 3d!!!
  • my card is (and was before recognised as "810 and later")

So what should I DO??? Huh

Have you restarted your system?

Do you have all the Compiz plugins installed along with the Fusion Icon?

Have you tried using KWin Effects instead of Compiz?

1yes I have restarted multiple
2all compiz plugins installed (besides it used to work before)
3and that's exactly what i'm saying : kwin(isnt the effects from within thw kde control center??) REFUSES the effects (as soon as I open the effects a message appears -black gray from task bar- that says that ...it referes several effects eg cube etcetc cannot be initiated /on opengl option/ then on Xrender it seems that cube is initiated but cube doesnot appear
 Undecided
should trasition be so "difficult"Huh
 Huh

It's actually the KDE System Settings (Configure Your Desktop) whereas the Control Centre is normally referred to as PCC (Configure Your Computer)

You could try using XRender instead of OpenGL (Desktop Effects > Advanced Tab)

In Default Applications have you checked to see you have the correct Window Manager selected?

Have you tried creating a new user account to see if it's something specific to your account.

How delayed?  as there have been some major updates to x.org and the graphics drivers and so on.

I know Gnome will run it fine - can't recall if I've tried it in lxde and xfce but I believe they have there own WM's

 Wink
by the way to solve this
pclos 2011.6+task-3ddesktop give compiz just fine on my system
... Roll Eyes so I think the problem has to be with the "mark all updates" procedure that left sth wrong
any way I ve put back my old installation and I'm ready for a clean install!!

Just to recap:  You are following the correct procedure for updating and keeping your system in order? http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,42874.0.html  Just asking because you're mentioning a problem with "mark all updates".  You mentioned your recent update was "rather delayed", so how long?  You may very well have migrated to the newer version of xorg which has a different support for older intel video. http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/board,77.0.html  Afterwards you may need to choose a different video driver under PCC.
