"No problems here with my 2600HD Mobility or HD3450. Sure my cpu does have to work a little harder because I went from a 9500gt to the HD3450, but its a lot better than using the on-board HD3200. Really my only issue right now with my HD3450 is a conflict with the HDMI sound and my usb headset. I can't get sound in any of my browsers"

have you tried this?

Resizing windows makes noise, just moving the mouse cursor makes noise, the noise I hear is 100% positively correlated to what is happening on the screen.

I went out and bought some JVC headphone and fired up my on-board sound and I think I might be hearing the same sounds as you. Never noticed any sound before with my USB headset, but when I move my cursor around I can hear noise too. I have a Gigabyte board as well so I really do think your problem is related to your motherboard.

Having purchased just about every Major brand available in the USA, If I were to purchase a new Video Card today, I would go with this VisionTek. Keep in mind, it does require a 6 pin power plug. Of all the Different Brands, My Two best Cards are a VisionTek with a Fan and a ZOTAC Fanless. Both of these companies offer a Lifetime Guaranty. Be careful when purchasing a Card with a "Lifetime Warranty", they both require you to "Register" the Card in 30 Days. Added to these, Sparkle makes a Great Card as well. This all said, I'm using my VisionTek HD3870 as I write this and it's running flawless. I have experienced with video Cards, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. I Don't Hear the Fan with my VisionTek HD3870. I have a Sapphire HD3850 and it sounds like a concrete mixer. LOL.

As a General Rule, Gamer's prefer Nvidia and Non-Gamers prefer ATi Chip Set Cards.

Hope this Helps. One last thought. Video Card Drivers can be Tempermental at Times. PCLinuxOS  Driver Maintainer I believe uses a ATi Chip Set Card. When in Rome, Do as the Roman's Do. LOL. Tex Does the BEST JOB with ATi Drivers as I have experienced in ANY Linux Distro.

a fanless video card will use less or in the worst case the same as that 8400 he has now

psu shouldn't be a problem

Yes I understand that, I was referring to a powerful card where it could well be an issue

If you can keep you head while all around you are losing theirs, then you have misunderstood the situation.

yes, that is true but in this specific case we are aiming at a different type of card

I've been fooling around with linux since about Oct-2005. IMO the old adage "linux loves old technology" may still apply.  Also, For linux, I've stayed away from ATI video cards as a rule. I'm starting to experiment though.
I have a couple high-end (well, back in the day, anyhow) AMD socket 939 machines with GT 7600  or GT 7950 Nvidia video cards and they give me no trouble with electrical noise of any kind. The 7950's are both fanless.
FWIW- If you can, separate your video card and your sound card as far as possible from one another on the mobo. It helps. Try to get another card between them. A card for extra USB slots or an ethernet card or whatever.

 Good luck.

I'm not Kreskin, but......I'm going to blame the 'NOISE" on improper shielding of computers and/or SPEAKERS.  If you are getting 'noise" thru the speakers -and attributing it to the computer - try moving the speakers farther away from the monitor, and tower....Have you tried different speakers to see if the same "noise" occurs?  Tried a diff sound card?
or even a small thing like "tweaking" your sound settings for the Scard...or muting things such as the PC beep??

Also there is a thing called: SPREAD SPECTRUM in some bios's...that can help with computer generated noise if : 'ENABLED'. [Yea, some decrease in performance BS - from OUTDATED info.] This sometimes helps with Radio Interference.... Wink

ATI or Nvidia makes no difference , as long as it works properly with the drivers PCLOS has detected.   If you are a HIGH END GAMER, then you should be using a windows product designed specifically for that O/S, to achieve optimum performance.
Some of my LINUX friends have had good luck with a reasonably priced fanless ATI Radeon HD 4350 ...
The exact MB/ model is your preference -512 should suffice....

READ THIS NEWS ABOUT AMD/ATI and OPEN SOURCE...  Some here might be interested also.

> IMPORTANT - ATI Video INFO : HERE ARE THE ATI LINUX DRIVER RELEASE NOTES (pdf)....
Power supply fans, CPU fans, and video card fans can be culprits - but the NOISE must be ISOLATED to solve this RIDDLE of a post.

Do you have a WINDOWS o/s on your HD (dual boot) -if so does it do it with that.....or does it occur with a LIVE CD also Huh
