I say personally, do yourself a favour a download this distro as soon as you can, if you have any interest in Linux whatsoever. To me, this is one of the best OS's out there. I've been running it now since last years, and it's no trouble at all. All I recommend is keep an eye on the updates and the forum software announcements. The developer is extremely helpful and posts up any important changes and updates you need to know. It's a rolling release system, so you don't have to reinstall every six months like Narly Nachos etc. I was a bit unsure of how this would work in the long run, but I can certainly say it has proved effortless for me to keep up to date. It's just a brilliant community focused distro, the best there is imho. No bugs or nastiness like Narly Nachos, just a solid, working, seriously attractive system. Get it now!

Weeellllll..... Small niggle here. The Nvidia 96x series driver is now gone and I have to use nv instead. Not as nice, but it'll do. |

The Nvidia 96x series driver is now gone and I have to use nv instead. I believe they don't work with the latest x.org 1.10.2 release - it's a drag when it happens but I suppose there's gotta be a "cut-off" for older stuff at some point in time. |

Yes and no, YouCanToo. PCLOS urges some bucks outta your pocket at least five years or more after M$ and Apple require you to buy new hardware if you want to stay on the cutting edge.  If you want to or need to be static with your hardware, go for a static distro instead. Ridin' the rolling release train you'll have to upgrade your hardware at times, but Linux itself won't let you down for much longer than that. There's a lot of projects focussing on that old crap technology, but it would not bring us forward if Linux always implied: "Will run on your 1965 hardware". Or am I getting something wrong here? |

I guess the nouveau driver doesn't work for you? Nah, I keep getting the "Failed to start X" and running the config tool. Switch to NV and it works. I just can't get up to 1280x1024. Tops out at 1024x768. And this is an old computer... I am running the LXDE variant on this PC and it is wonderful for the kids. I think the PC is from 2002, so the fact that it is still working and this usable is incredible! It's one of the old Gateway Profile 4 All-in-One's. Can't really upgrade the video because there is no room for anything in there. http://www.referenceguide.com/reviews/gatewayprofile4.htmThey can still use this old thing to watch movies from my server, music video's on Youtube, and play the educational games and web games like iCarly and Playhouse Disney. Let me reiterate, this is not a big deal for me! Tex, this is a fantastic distro. I have it on 5 computers and they all work great. The single best networking configuration suite that I have used at home. Media and file server, laptop, kids PC, and HTPC all work great. |

You could just not update but sooner or later you would want something new and things might break from not updating. It's best to use PCLinuxOS the way it was intended to be used, it's more fun anyway!
