I know where my towel is.

« on: June 06, 2011, 01:47:44 PM »

It has been a month and running now, and I am still running the same distro.  Considering my past habits of constantly looking for the next distro to update because things just weren't what I wanted, that is an amazing accomplishment.  Since I came back to Linux about three years ago I have been through the top dozen distros several times, as well as trying out all manner of new flavors as they have come along.  In the course of that time, I have tried PCLOS a couple of times and wandered away always chasing who knows what.

I am now here to stay, and this is how I know that is true.  In the past month I have contributed extensively to the forums.  I have been on other distro forums and commented a couple of times at most.  I have been under the hood with PCLOS a bit more than usual (due to my own motivations, not due to any issues with PCLOS), tinkering with settings, creating a theme I like, moving packages in and out.  Usually with a distro I add a couple of programs I want from the repos and leave it at that.  I specifically installed Mini-Me so I could customize things the way I wanted.  Usually I want the kitchen sink.  Also, instead of adding other distros or spending my time on distrowatch to see who just released a new version or updated a package I want, I have spent my time on the forums.  I have reinstalled PCLOS a couple of times as I have broken various things through my tinkering.  Usually if I break something, it is an excuse to try something new.  I am looking forward to a bright future with PCLOS and I feel at home here.  Most of all, later today I am going to do a reinstall and create a new partition (yes, I could just use parted and resize, but I am going to fix my radeon card with the updated instructions so it is timely).  This new partition (heaven help me) is going to be a test partition so I can start contributing to the distro.  I may not be ready for packaging, but I certainly know how to break things.  So, on that topic, anyone know how I get on the testing mailing list?

DarkBlueKoala , There is no reason for you to look for an operating system.
You have found it and if you go to  ( http://pclosmag.com/ ) and download all the magazines
you will see why. It is also the best magazine produced by non professionals. It is articles written
by members of the forum and published by them. You might even feel the urge to try and do an
article or two. Welcome and watch out for that sandbox, it is just like when you were a kid, so much fun.

Nice post DarkBlueKoala

When you sign up for the testing group you will begin receiving emails from Tex advising which apps he has put into the testing section.

When  you receive that email you'll be good to go to begin testing and reporting back - in that same email thread - on how the testing went for that particular app.

It's useful to add into the email what hardware the apps were tested on - and of course, any error messages which may of popped up.

Welcome to the test-nest.  Grin

DarkBlueKoala, I enjoyed reading your post. I was always looking at different distros myself, looking for something that worked like it was supposed to. I also installed the KDE mini and added the applications I use. I have been a very happy PCLinuxOS user ever since. PCLinuxOS works and in the event there is a problem it gets fixed, you just don't find that anywhere else. I look at other distros in Virtualbox but they don't stay around for more than a couple of hours at best. The best of everything is right here and I have no plans of changing operating systems ever again.

It's nice to be able to turn on my computer and have everything work. I was so fed up with having to fix things in other operating systems and then starting all over after an update trashed it. I like the new artwork, the great hardware support and the community that makes it all happen. PCLinuxOS is on my computer to stay and I highly recommend it every chance I get.

Well said! I'm a newbie to Linux and over the years I wanted like heck to leave Windows for the constant shutdowns, crashes and just downright sillyness that is caused by that OS. When I was told about PCLinuxOS by someone on Ebay I thought the joke was on me. Was I wrong! I will NEVER go back. Never. I've had too much fun with this OS! I can do just about anything with PCLinuxOS that the others cannot. I was so AFRAID of leaving Windows because I didn't think I could learn any other OS - the folks in the chatroom, the man from Ebay and the easy to install instructions made everything so worth it.

I want to thank each and everyone who has helped me to make PCLinuxOS the premium OS to install on my system. Thank you, EVERYONE. I have been running for almost two months without a single crash. I've had errors, but that's normal. Still PCLinuxOS keeps running strong and fast on this OLD laptop. Thank you all once again. I will always appreciate all your help that you have shown me. Bless you all! Windows? NEVER again!

I am no longer afraid to leave an inferior OS behind thanks to you ALL.

That is so true! After runing PCLinuxOS for a month or two, you soon discover that other distros just don't measure up any more.
