Having a break from The Toshiba and Enlightenment I thought I would put KDE on a newer laptop , A Packard Bell Easynote . Hard disc wiped with Spotmau , Checked disc for errors , No problem . Checked everything worked in Live CD , No problem . Installed to hard disc accepting the defaults on screen . Rebooted and removed disc when told , Now it has sat there with " restarting system " for the last hour . Is it me , The computer ran Windows Ok .

Wonder if that is just a power management issue. What happens if you reboot the machine? I expect you will find the new system is installed fine.

I get this with one of my machines - it refuses to restart after installing from the disk and selecting to restart. However, no problems once it has been turned off and on again! If you can get the machine to reboot cleanly, then that is the best choice, but the reset button will work otherwise Wink

Turns out it's a hardware problem , Battery packed up , Even running on mains cannot get anything . Battery must be trying to use all the power to charge and not enough to run the Laptop .

I've seen this on certain laptops after install, refuses to restart (not distro specific) and requires hard shut down in some cases.  The hard shut down is a non issue because you are still running from live CD, power on and it boots from the HDD fine.

What if you try to run it from mains, with the battery not installed?

If you take the battery out you do not get any Indicator lights . Funny thing it's running Gnome off the Live cd no problem ( so far ) . My desk top running KDE has just packed up as well , I think that is PSU related . Can anyone who has a Packard bell tell me if the red light flashing means the battery is charging .
