My graphics card is 3d capable so I was wondering whether Compiz or Kwin would give me more 3d options over the other??

Intel graphics with 3d graphics acceleration.
2GB system (not graphics) ram

compiz works if you use gnome or kde4

kde desktop effects(kwin) only in kde4

compiz works faster on most cases

right now if your card is old and unsupported by the manufacturer, there is a possibility that compiz is not for you

i just had that problem with the xorg update that lost a good portion of support for my ati radeon 9200(including kwin and compiz), everything under hd2000 not using proprietary driver could experience problems

basically if you have used compiz in the past, you will prefer it over anything else, if you are new to this 3d extra effects kwin could be perfect for you, specially if you have lots of cpu and gpu power

Used Compiz since early Beryl, but now I've really grown accustomed and use kwin with Nvidia GTX 460, as everything about the OS seems faster, smooth and stable in current comparisons to Compiz use. Grin

Kwin works more reliably in kde4 than compiz on some systems. I always have had to turn off the 'blur' effect, though.

KDE's native effects are much more stable, and use less system resources than Compiz in my experience.  Stay with KWin.

But I'm not a KDE user anymore, so I cannot speak for version 4.6.

it has always been all the contrary unless you have a intel card with good support

compiz is older, more stable, less prone to crash but is also unfriendly with certain hardware or certain drivers

with current xorg compiz is working like a dream with my netbook using intel gma3150

Was using Kwin all these days and today morning decided to give compiz a shot.
Result - Compiz IMHO is much faster than kwin and less resource hungry compared to kwin.
Plus earlier while playing mp3's the sound would always be little distorted with a slight crackling. After switching to compiz sound is crystal clear.  Wink

I guess what I'm trying to point out is it doesn't matter what I use or what you use. In the end, it's jcolyng who has to choose what's better for her and unless she tries both, she won't know for sure, would she?
