I have a Windows 2000 Professional SP4 system on a 12GB Hard Drive.  I would like to know if I should keep Windows on my Hard Drive or not?  What is the best way to partition the Hard Drive with or without Windows?

Hi srfrby

For partitioning the drive I would use something like a GParted LiveCD

Gparted can be downloaded and burned to a CD, from which you can boot.  When the GP LiveCD is running you can then partition the disk as you wish.

As for keeping Windows 2000 I guess only you can make that call  Wink  Do you have the Win 2000 install disk in case you want to reinstall it at a later date..........

If you can keep you head while all around you are losing theirs, then you have misunderstood the situation.

PCLinuxOS 32bit & 64bit; 3.2.17bfs kernel, KDE 4.8.3; nvidia 295.53, Athlon 64 X2 4200+; 4GB Ram; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB; x.org 1.10.4 ; 500GB/320GB

if you should or should not have windows, that depends on you, if you need it or not, if you want to dualboot windows and linux in the same hard disk, that is what i do in my netbook, xp and pclinux live happy there

wait, your hard disk is 12gb of size and you want to install pclinux there?  won't fit i think

please give us more info

personally i wouldn't bother installing two os on such a small hard disk, probably very old hard disk

Is this a laptop or a desktop computer? If a desktop, and you wish to keep Win2K, I'd install a second hard drive for the Linux installation. If a laptop, I'd consider a much larger hard drive before considering a dual boot with Win2K and Linux. With only 12 GB, you have to choose between Win2K and Linux as you really don't have the room for both, and have either remain truly useful.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Is 2K still being supported by Microsoft?? If not it will be full of security holes..

I would go with a PCLinuxOS install over the entire disk since the disk is so small..

You can either use G Parted as already suggested or if installing over the entire disk let the install delete the Windows partition and use the entire disk for Linux..
