Hi to all,
Just to give you an idea of what has happened....
2 days ago I had problems downloading 700MB iso's. The download just stopped afer about 50 or 100MB of download.
I have contacted Bigpond (my isp in OZ) and they are about to test the lines to the house..
Now, as I said, the 3 machines in question will not D/L a 700MB iso, or anything bigger,  they just freeze after 50-100MB.
1 is a laptop and connects via wireless the other 2 machines are wired and al have been working normally up the the last update.
I then decided to try my server, which HAS NOT been updated except for "KDF' and "Gkrellm".
I went to the same site and started to D/L a 3.4GB iso of Knoppix V6.4.3, and what do you know it has not stopped at all!!!!
The D/L is now at 2.5GB and still going. So what is happened to the updated systems.
The updates were all done through 'Synaptic' so there should be no problems there, but on these machines I cannot load down any iso's???
The Knoppix D/L is now at 2.7G
Your thoughts as always greatfully received

 I have a question.

You said that you were trying to download an .iso of PClinuxOS that failed and then you said that you "went to the same site and started to D/L a 3.4GB iso of Knoppix"

What site are you using to download PClinuxOS from?

gezza,

Here's a tip anyone can use. If you can copy the URL (web address) of the iso you want to download, it's then a simple matter of pasting that address into a terminal window. Why would you want to do that? Because, if you use wget, you can resume the download from where it stopped or was terminated. However, wget will only use a single channel to download that large file. If you want to decrease the download time, in most cases, use prozilla. By default, prozilla will open four channels to download a single file. Each channel will be a portion of the file, and when completely downloaded, each piece will automagically be put together to form one file. The command for prozilla is proz. This is a very small package, and is available from Synaptic.

Again, using either wget or prozilla, you can resume from where the download previously left off.

The D/L site I was using was 'AARNET' here in OZ.
The 700MB file was Enlightenment 2010.12
The 3.4GB one was Knoppix
Neithe of the fukky upgraded machines will D/L the iso's.
The only machine I have not upgraded is my server running a bulk standard 2010.12 and this has no problem D/L these iso's. So what is the problem and does anyone else have the troubles?
I use Firefox to do the D/Ling. Do you think the problem may lie here?
It has never failed before..though there is a first time.

I believe your best source is "directly from the source", http://www.pclinuxos.com/. In the upper right corner of the page is the "Get PCLinuxOS" section. I don't see any Australian mirrors, or anything with AU in the URL. But here are 3 repositories in Japan:

http://ftp-srv2.kddilabs.jp/Linux/packages/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/
http://ftp.riken.go.jp/Linux/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/PCLinuxOS/live-cd/

The only machine I have not upgraded is my server running a bulk standard 2010.12 and this has no problem D/L these iso's.

It's hard to know if Firefox is the culprit, or if there are other issues. If you continue having problems with the other machines, use the server to download the iso. Again, if you use wget or prozilla to download, even if the download is interrupted, you can resume the download without having to start all over. Both are very small packages, available in the repositories, and are well worth having. I have used both for years, and both have worked flawlessly. Prozilla is the faster one, because it can download "pieces" of the file simultaneously. As an example, to use prozilla to download the full e17 PCLinuxOS 2010.12 iso, you would open a terminal, change to the directory where you want the file stored, then enter:

proz http://ftp-srv2.kddilabs.jp/Linux/packages/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/pclinuxos-enlightenment.2010.12.iso

It is that simple. Prozilla will break the file into 4 pieces and download each piece simultaneously. If the download is interrupted, you can resume the download without having to start all over.

aarnet is an offical mirror and is pretty fast for us Aussies.  I have never experienced any like gezza has.

I will just pop over there and check if I have any problems with an iso download. (I'll also check if the iso's are up to date) brb...

dates, sizes and md5's are OK for the 4 iso's I checked.

... downloading ..

... downloading, now at 560MB.

(Using FF 4.0.1 and yes via bugpond) No problems.  So we need to look at something else.

Hi,
I have just installed prozilla and run it. It also locks up solid after about 2 mins. but restarts after about 5 mins.
The real point is why do I have no problems with a non-upgraded system?
Will report back if it runs to the end.
Gezza
Addition..1
The download stopped after about 5mins and the restarted after about 2 mins.
Don't know what this means, at 74 the thinking cap is getting smaller.

Are you running low on space? Post results of these two commands. (You don't need to be root.)

df /
df /home

hi to all,
Not really:--
df  /
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md0               20G  6.4G   13G  35% /
[gerald@ws2 ~]$ df /home
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md1               40G  1.9G   38G   5% /home
[gerald@ws2 ~]$ df /mnt/data
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md3              854G  355G  456G  44% /mnt/data
Prozilla downloaded the Enlightenment iso in about 45 mins, I would have expected it to be 25mins.
But it did all come with a couple of mins stopping along the way? is this normal.
I reinstalled Firefox 4.01 but it made no difference, I also install the en-gb file for the English text.--no difference.
I seem to have plenty of space left as I send all  D/L's to /mnt/data. although some bits turn in /home/Downloads.
Sorry to be such a problem, but I would like to sort it out.
As I said, I have no problems with the non-upgraded server.
Just the fully up-graded ones.

The download should have been continuous, but at least you now have the iso.

Holy moly, you've got plenty of space left. I didn't see anything mentioned about using RAID, but since Tex mentioned it, he must remember your hardware, or saw something I missed. In any case, if your arrays are acting up, that could be a problem.

If you're using RAID, is it hardware (controller board) or software-driven? Are all of your servers pretty close in hardware specifications? It may help, as a starting point, to know what kernel you're running on the non-updated server, and what kernel you're running on the ones that are updated. In a terminal on the non-updated server, issue the command uname -a, then the same on one of the updated servers. Post the results.

Hi there,
Raid6 over 4*500Gb drives. Using MDADM--software raid.
I created a guest login to test whether I had something stuck in home folder but I still have the same problem.
On ws2 where I am now...uname -a gives...
Linux ws2.sol.home 2.6.38.5-pclos1.bfs #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue May 3 11:54:48 CDT 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux.
However I have tested it with 2.6.33.7.bfs 2.6.37.4.bfs and the results are the same
will add the server kernel when I next boot that system.
Server is now ready....uname -a
Linux server.sol.home 2.6.33.7-pclos6.pae #1 SMP Fri Oct 22 00:00:59 CDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
The only diff is the pae kernel.
By the way,,,all my systems are raid1,5 or 6 depending upon the number of drives,2,3,4.
The other machine is much the same fully updated running raid5.
I do not intend to loose any more data.
this is very puzzleing!!!

Unlike where tedlane is (NBN friendly Wink ) I've found accessing the Aussie mirrors with Australia's finest ISP is an exercise in futility. Use Heanet. Better still set up a local repository of heanet. I am only half the nutter I was before I used this method.
