I had a lot of problems with my PC freezing as soon as I plugged in my new Netgear WN111v2 Wireless-N USB Adapter. This was solved in this thread:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,89266.msg747422.html#msg747422

However, although the freezing up/crashing problem is fixed, the device doesn't work and can't connect to the internet. I was asked to do the following:

In your new thread do the following

1. Open the terminal, log in as root and then type this command "service syslog start"

2. Unplug the usb dongle, wait for two seconds, plug it back in, wait for three seconds and then run this command and give its output. "cat /var/log/syslog | tail -n 20"

OK, Did that:

[root@localhost adrian]# cat /var/log/syslog | tail -n 20

Any help welcomed, and thanks again guys for solving my last problem.   Smiley Smiley

A bit of googling led me to the following link: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ar9170

The firmware is GPL licensed and hence can be included in the repository for all to use conveniently. It will be best if you could open a package request thread and request for this firmware to be added and then you can install it safely through synaptic. This will benefit you and all users of the card you have that will come after you.

ar9170-1.fw ar9170-2.fw is already part of the kernel-firmware-extra package. I can add ar9170.fw to see if that will help or not.

Thank you - much appreciated.  Smiley However, I'm away for 10 days as of now and won't be able to report back for a while - sorry.  Sad

Hi all

It has taken me ages to get it to work, but I'm posting this message connected to the internet by my Netgear WN111v2.  Grin
Thought I'd post the solution in case anyone else searches the forum for help.

It was a firmware problem after all, but adding the ar9170.fw firmware package didn't help me. After trying all kinds of things, it seems the ar9170 firmware is NOT the firmware needed - it has been superseded by carl9170-1.fw

I went to this page here:

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170#Firmware-1

then downloaded the carl9170-1.fw firmware and as root, placed it in /lib/firmware
I then put my Netgear WN111v2 dongle in a USB slot and ran pcc>Network & Internet>Set up a new Interface... and chose the non-ndiswrapper option and all went well. For some reason it found my wifi network but refused to connect the first two times, but is working fine now.

Solved!!  Smiley Smiley
