Couple of years ago I had Compiz installed then it all changed and now I am fully updated to PcLinux2010 KDE4 but I really miss the cool graphics of Compiz (now Compiz-Fusion).

I always managed to learn about & fix other problems but graphics / cards / 3D are just baffling. Could anyone tell me is it possible to have Compiz-fusion working on my PC as before with all the same hardware?.

One thing I found to help me is this;

[ian@localhost ~]$ ./compiz-check

Gathering information about your system...

 Distribution:          PCLinuxOS
 Desktop environment:   KDE4
Graphics chip:         nVidia Corporation G84 [GeForce 8600 GTS] (rev a1)
 Driver in use:         nvidia
 Rendering method:      Nvidia

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system...

 Checking for texture_from_pixmap...               [ OK ]
Checking for non power of two support...          [FAIL]
Checking for composite extension...               [ OK ]
 Checking for FBConfig...                          [FAIL]
 Checking for hardware/setup problems...           [SKIP]

At least one check had to be skipped:
Error: Unable to detect maximum 3D texture size

Going by this info it doesn't look possible but it worked fine before!

I would think that a "GeForce 8600" would be perfectly capable of running Compiz. In fact, I am using a lesser card (8400) and it works just fine, although I don't use it.  Wink

What have you tried to get it working?

I have task-3ddesktop installed. all compiz and fusion-icon installed and emerald. CCSM runs fine but does not have any actual effect on the desktop enviroment when I change it's settings.

2 wierd things is after the usual updating I now get a message that my 'system does not support 3D desktop effects' in PCC / Configure 3D Desktop effects. Last time I looked Compiz Fusiion was checked. secondly I used to have a NVIDIA graphics card configuration program in the application launcher which has disappeared now.

Have you checked in Synaptic that the latest Nvidia Driver is officially installed?

Also, you may want to check in

Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  >> Default Applications >

that you have Compiz selected.

If you haven't already done so, you may want to restart your desktop.

You have enabled Desktop Effects in KDE CC - Workspace Appearance & Behaviour?

Have you adjusted the vaious effects available in the 'All Effects' tab?

Years ago I ran Compiz & Beryl  but have found the native KDE4 effects just as good and even better.

Just a suggestion in case you missed it is all  Wink

Good News,
Another load of updates from synaptic last night and now I've got Compiz-fusion working. Needed to disable desktop effects in Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  as
some mouse actions were conflicting. Still think it's much better than KDE and it seams to have more effects. Only having trouble setting a different wallpaper picture for each desktop.
Many thanks for the suggestions, guess it's always best to be patient for the updates.

Try "Right Click" within any Desktop and select "Desktop Settings" and at "Layout" then choose "Desktop" and choose a  wallpaper to 'apply".
Keep Desktop #1 set at "Folderview" to easily keep the Desktop Icons in view.

When I right clicked it was set as 'groupings desktop' but when I changed the wallpaper as per your instructions above all four desktops change at the same time / same picture.
