Hi,
I've tried to install compiz (through synaptic), by selecting task-3ddesktop and I get a window saying it needs further dependencies. When I click okay on that box, I get another saying other packages can't be changed, installed, uninstalled.
What do I do?
Is there another way to install this.
By the way an hour before this, I did a full update and reboot and everything is running fine.

Even for this rig, performance is good and all 3d works

Do you have a video card that is capable of doing 3D graphics? What DE are you using? What "dependencies" is it looking for? what "packages" can't be changed, installed, uninstalled"?

Someone will know the answer. You must supply the info.  Wink

if you run FullMonty then compiz is blocked because it would trash your desktop layout.

@Rudge

My computer,
ACER Aspire SA60, F661GX motherboard running BIOS R01-A4, intel Celron 2.8g proccessor.
2gig ram
Nvidia FX5900 turbo graphic card with 256mb on board ram (3D display is not a problem for this card)

Mark additional required changes?
To be upgraded
compositing-server-common
compositing - wm-common
gnome-menus
libcompizconfig0
libglitz
libgnome-window-settings1
python-gnome-menus

I click Mark
Result, new box

Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade
task-3ddesktop:
Depends: ccsm
Depends: compiz
Depends: compiz-decorator-gtk
Depends: compiz-fusion
Depends: libcompiz0
Depends: libcompizconfig-python

Which only gives me the choice to close

@pinoc
I thought I had read else where that compiz is being used with fullmonty. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm new to this OS.
The reason I wanted to install Compiz is that I have read that it gives good performance in some things (more than just eye candy) and I was interested in trying it.
I am always looking for ways to get the best out of my computer  Smiley

How do I remove fullmonty to try compiz, or isn't that possible and is there an advantage to this?

Although I have changed the wall papers.

ok, that means you run the KDE FullMonty desktop on which you can not use compiz. If you absolutely want to run compiz then you can only do that for a new user AND the normal KDE desktop layout:
1) use fm_switcher to change to the normal KDE layout
2) add a new user account
3) login to the new user account
4) install compiz:
a) if FullMonty was installed via Synaptic: start Synaptic, search for and remove the fullmonty-rpm and install compiz
b) if FullMonty was installed from the DVD: remove the file /etc/apt/preferences and install compiz via Synaptic

NOTE: with compiz installed you can no longer use the FullMonty desktop for any existing or future user account!

Thank you for your advice.

I have just one question before I change anything.

Could you tell me what are the main differences between the FM desktop and using compiz. Which one gives the best performance.
If the FM desktop is the best, then I will stay with that.

My install was from the DVD.

you already know what FullMonty looks like, or KDE, Gnome, or whatever other DE, just google for some screenshots. Just use whatever you like best. Compiz has nothing to do at all with performance, optimizing execution speed, or anything similar. Compiz just provides some additional graphical gimmick effects, that's all.

Thank you very much for the advise.
It has been very helpful and I think I will be sticking with what I have.
