i have a webcam which is detected in the PCLOS control center but when I use skype I cant find it.
Its a newish USB logitech webcam.
Is there anyway to test the mic other than in skype? I have a mic plugged into my soundcard which also doesnt seem to do anything. Sad

Open a terminal, su to root, then enter;

[root@localhost ~]# modprobe snd-usb-audio                 <Enter>

Then in Skype click the lower blue icon and look here for the mic sound card.

Click the Microphone drop down menu to see if you find something similar to this;

If you do, select it, then click the Apply button at the bottom. Try a test call.

Did you do the command as root?

yes
Code:
[root@localhost profx]# modprobe snd-usb-audio
FATAL: Error running install command for snd_usb_audio

Look in the directory /etc/modprobe.d to see if you have that module blacklisted in any of the blacklist files. If so, comment that line out. You need to be root to do any edits to any file there. I also have a file in there named snd-usb-audio that contains the following;

install snd-usb-audio test -f /var/lock/subsys/alsa && /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-usb-audio

Which explicitly loads the snd-usb-audio module at boot time. See if that's there in your installation.

I bought the Logitech C250 yesterday. I had a similar difficulty. I did a few different things. I rebooted with the camera plugged in and restarted skype with it plugged in also. Seems fine now and I can unplug and replug the camera all I want. Works great. Microphone works also.

Can you get a microphone to work in the microphone jack of the computer?

Can we have the exact model of the webcam please?

With regards to testing the mic separately, are you using pulse audio or not?

sorry, its a logitech quickcam messenger, V-UBC40
should modprobe snd-usb-audio only work if the webcam is plugged in.
I have a way around this by dual booting to windows when i want to use the webcam, but its not great. Sad
