Hi, I am trying to install PClinux KDE desktop 2010.12 onto a sony vaio pcv-rs402. The HDD has one NTFS partition with windows XP on it which can be blown away. I was hoping the KDE desktop disc which I have duly downloaded and burned would lead me through this fairly easily but thats not the case.
The machine has 2 optical drives and the disk will only happily run in the primary master device so thats one issue out of the way.
So the machine boots to the splash screen and after a couple of mins it gives me a command line interface requesting localhost and password, I have no idea what this is and a quick scan around the forum has lfte me none the wiser, please could someone explain what is going on and how to overcome this.  Cry
Thankyou for your help.  Smiley

Heya linuxhost,

The reason you reached a shell instead of a graphical login is because your graphics display card wasn't properly recognized. OK. when you are prompted to enter localhost, which by the way should be user, enter root. When asked for a password, enter root again. You won't be able to see what you type in the password but don't worry about it. Just make sure you type in correctly.

If you get not Password incorrect message, it mean you had successfully logon as a superuser. Type in pcc and you will get a primitive display of the PCLinuxOS Control Center.

Navigate to Display and set it to Vesa. And configure your display accordingly. When don, type in startx.

I hope that'll get you to a GUI. HTH.

Logged in with user root &  password root OK but when I entered pcc it did not bring up a gui  Sad I guessing it does not like the onboard ATI 9200 adapter.

Try the command startx please.

If no luck check the LiveCD with its option "Media check".

You were not suppose to get a gui. Just a row of text with sections to configure but very similar to the gui-fied PCC. You needed to use the tab to navigate around and when you highlight Display, press Enter. Again tab until you find Vesa. That is the safest setting you can use to get a point and click (sometimes type) interface. After you save your settings and is back at the prompt, type in startx. Hopefully that will bring up some sort of desktop.

Have you tried booting the CD in VESA mode?
