Im using PCLOS XFCE.

I have tried to install Scribus, a desktop publishing programme.

When I click on "apply", it appears to download for about one second only, then starts applying changes.

This can't be right as Scribus is an 84 Mb download, this should take quite a long time on my internet connection (512 kbps.)

When I close Synaptic after everything is completed and select Scribus from the menu (menu>Office>Scribus) then Scribus appears to start, as an entry appears on the task bar for less than one second, then it disappears. No further sign of Scribus.

I have deleted Scribus via Synaptic, then changed to a different repo, then reload etc and reinstall Scribus. Exactly the same thing happens. ( I did that in case one repo had a bad copy of Scribus.) Tried that with several repos.

What do I try next?

Can someone please install Scribus from the repo and see if it works for them?

I have also tried installing some other piece of software (anagramarama) to check if my Synaptic is working, and it installed fine.

Have you replaced your Synaptic Package Manager sources.list as instructed at the top of this forum in the news section?

yes, I have replaced the sources list, reloaded, installed all updates yesterday.

I used the internode Australian mirror first, all the updates worked fine.
After I had the trouble with installing Scribus I tried changing the repo to heanet, then a Czech one, all behaved the same. Each time I reloaded after choosing the new repo.

Thanks

Now I have progressed...

I followed the following to repair any problems with the rpm database:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,80839.0.html

Then in synaptic I removed and then installed Scribus. This time I got a download which lasted about 12 minutes, much more what I would expect for that file size. It installed without error messages.

Now in the menu I select office>scribus and..........the same as before. Scribus flashes up for a second on the task list.

In a terminal I tried to start scribus and got the following:

xxxxx@localhost ~]$ scribus
scribus: error while loading shared libraries: libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

What should I do now please?

I took that terminal response as a clue, went back to synaptic and did a search on libQtGUI and found a match, so I downloaded that and tried to launch scribus again - still no joy.

tried to launch Scribus from Terminal and got another error message about libQtXML.

Went back to synaptic and did a search on libQt and found heaps. I selected to install libQt3 which brought in some other stuff, and libQt4 which brought in an avalanche more. I selected "apply" and let it all install.

Success!!  Scribus now runs!

this raises the question - shouldn't all this libQt stuff have been brought in automatically as a dependency of Scribus?

Is this something I should post in the packaging section - that there appears to be missing dependencies for Scribus?
I am using PCLOS XFCE, maybe that is why I didn't already have the Qt4 stuff???

Thanks
