I just built a new machine:

CPU:  i3-560
ram:  4gb
HD:  SATA 160gb and 8ogb
M/B:  Gigabyte H55M

I retained the original IDE CD and DVD drives since those are inherently slower and there's not much advantage in SATA.

The problem now is that pclos will not install.  I have the 2010.12 live CD, but when I try to install it, it copies the usual pre-install stuff, then drops into a CLI login.  I tried entering the ROOT/ROOT user ID, but it then goes to a CLI prompt and I have no clue what it's waiting for.  I tried STARTX, but, of course it couldn't find the X server, and that was a failure.  Several other distros installed just fine, but pclos has been my workhorse for 4 or 5 years now (I started back in the .6 days) and I hate to give up on it. I'm on Mandriva 2010.2 right now.  Any idea what the heck is going on???  Anybody???

Bill_Hwy,

when logged in as root try the command XFdrake to configure your graphical setup (card, monitor, resolution, etc.).

By the way, what graphic card exactly do you have?

"then drops into a CLI login"

At what stage of installation this happened?

tschommer:

Thanks for answering-- the graphics card is a PCI NV 5200..  I'm trying to decide if I want to spend the money for a PCIEX card.  I'll try that 'fix'

uncle v:

Thanks also-- it happens at the beginning--nothing has actually been done yet, except to copy the pre-install from the CD

Solved!!

Torsten:  Thanks a lot--that did the trick.  After some fiddling with configuration, it went to the CLI prompt and I tried STARTX again.  Then it showed the usual install screen and went on with the install..
