Okay,

I want to try LibreOffice, but I am on my work computer.  Have been using OpenOffice for 5 years now.

IF I install LibreOffice and it doesn't work as I need it to with my invoices and other files, is there a way that I can REINSTALL openoffice??

Thanks.

I haven't had ANY difficulty with LibeOffice since this http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,86790.msg722215.html#msg722215
It works just the same as OOo did although I had to set my preferences to save in MS format that is soooo minor.  In fact, although just a "feeling" on my part I think it's a tad faster.

PCLinuxOS - without rivals

Dulwithe, the file formats haven't changed, and the base coding of OO and LibreOffce is still the same.

I've checked many of my OO documents (spreadsheets, text documents, one Base database), absolutely NO problem there.

But of course I understand your hesitations - it's important work documents you're talking about.

Should you still run into a problem, you can always uninstall LO and download the packages from OpenOffice.org (http://download.openoffice.org/index.html) and install them again.

Good luck!

from what i have been testing libreoffice is faster and more compatible with office

since the base is openoffice it is possible that you don't notice the change

remember that openoffice was abandoned by almost everybody because oracle is the owner now and nobody is happy with that

it is a natural step to abandon openoffice

if for a specific reason you can't use libreoffice and since openoffice will not be on repos anymore you will have to download the rpm form openoffice and install them by hand using konsole, a little hard but not impossible

the integration wouldn't be as good as with the old version on repos but nothing impossible to solve

Thanks everyone.  Now I feel confident that even in a worst case scenario I can return to openoffice.

I'll post my thoughts of LibreOffice once I've tried it at work a bit.

Hi Dulwithe,
LibreOffice 3.1.1 should work more than fine. If you absolutely need to reinstall OpenOffice then please follow the instructions here to get OO3.1.1 from my dropbox.

If you need compatibility with Word documents LO Writer may give you a few problems when using tables, that happened to me.

Anyway, OOo had problems with tables too when the document was save as .doc

I try to avoid .doc files as much as possible.   Cheesy

Compatibility issues can be frustrating when not running M$ software.  ;-(

i can't say that, i have to use .doc, .xls, .ppt, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx and other files(sometimes access databases) all day, all days of the week, i can't use native formats available in libreoffice  Sad

compatibility is decent right now i must say, practically don't have problems at all

in the past when you had office 97 on one machine and on another office 2000 you ended with a annoying situation with serious errors or parts not present, file working partially(after saving in compatibility mode...)

things haven't improved much, only between office 2007 and office 2010 things are somewhat decent but basically the same, it is a big mess

Yeah, M$ office files seem to have compatibility issues amongst software versions as well.  That is one of the several reasons I attempt to boycott M$ software.  ;-)
