I don't get a $ symbol.
su just returns.
                                                                                           <Enter>
> Password:

I already entered that to get here.

<-- Enter your root password                    <Enter>

response: bash: command not found

Here is where you are going wrong. Instead of following Old-Polack's instructions to enter your root password after typing su and pressing enter, you are typing in <-- Enter your root password. Also, to copy/paste commands to/from the terminal, first highlight the text you wish to copy in your browser, then press Ctrl-C. Then go to the terminal, and press Ctrl-Shift-V.

Well I read 8 or 10 articles on things
that can go wrong with bookmarks.  None
of them were exactly my problem, but
many seemed closely related.  Finally
I found the menu on Library and was
able to back up the bookmarks I had
reloaded again from my old system.

I checked files and sure enough, I had
5 html backups, AND ONE NEW .JSON FILE!

I thought I restored my bookmarks from that file!

I THOUGHT I WAS ALL FIXED UP AT LAST!
ALL MY DATA WAS RIGHT WHERE I WANTED IT!

But when I rebooted
IT ALL DISSAPPEARED AGAIN!

No bookmarks, no passwords, no email!

WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

THIS IS GETTING REALLY DEPRESSING!

How do I keep it from eating all
of my data all of the time?

The other thing that is really depressing
is trying to copy and paste data.
I've been copying and pasting data since 1980!
I never had any problem doing that before!
But I can't copy from or paste to the black
console screen!  I can't find any screen
configuration variables to adjust!

I thought I was all done days ago!

BUT NOW I'M STILL AT START!

And as clueless as ever!

Right after reboot open a file manager and delete the .mozilla folder in your home folder. It is a hidden folder so you'll have to enable looking at hidden files to see it. After deleting open firefox and import your bookmarks again. See if that solves the problem.

Did you get your modem issue sorted?

Huh?

Here's what I have been doing:
After booting up, I copy my old files
from the old hard drive to the new
drive.  .Firefox to .firefox and .mozilla-
thunderbird into .thunderbird. Instantly,
everything is exactly as I want it, and
I can work fine with bookmarks and even
all my passwords on tap: just like
my old system. I was thrilled that
it was so easy!  Last time I even
made a .JSON file and at least
tried to restore my bookmarks
from that.  Everything looks perfect.

But when I shut down, it all dissapears!
I can't find the files that were right
there with my old setup.  IT'S ALL GONE.

I didn't delete the new generic files from
the new drive before I added the data from
the old drive.  I just added the old data,
which works perfect until I reboot.

Is what I should do?

Whatever I do, it seems to be deleted and
replaced with a new default generic file.

NO.  I'm still trying to copy and paste the
new commands into the black console screen,
rather than manually typOing them in.
Everyone says it's easy, but I've totally failed.

THANKS FOR REPLYING!

As Old-Polack would say, you are not providing details about what you've tried, only telling a story about what you think you've done. Wink Grin I have told you how to copy and paste, and so has Old-Polack. Here are the posts themselves for reference:

... to copy/paste commands to/from the terminal, first highlight the text you wish to copy in your browser, then press Ctrl-C. Then go to the terminal, and press Ctrl-Shift-V.
Of course you can. How do you think I was able to post that? I highlighted the text I wanted copied, in the konsole, (left click drag) then middle clicked into the reply window with the cursor set at the position where I wanted the text to appear.

Also, following these directions would be quite helpful to us: Wink

Worry about them later. For now, concentrate on learning how to post properly,  with real quote tags and code tags and proper copy/pasting, so we can make sense of what you are posting.

To copy - left click and hold down the left button and drag over the text to highlight it.
When you have all of the text highlighted that you want to copy - right click and then left click on copy.

Then go to the place that you want to paste the text to and right click and then left click on paste.

Its that simple !

KP,

Only just read this thread "Oh No" does not really constitute a good subject header as it say nothing in regard to what your issue may be..

That aside, if you are copyig th details to .Firefox or .firefox thats part of what you are doing incorrectly.

The dotfile for firefox is ./mozilla/firefox (iirc - its been months since I last had firefox in use.)

as stated by others you need to be more exact in the narrative of what you have actually done.

which terminal application are you using for the shell commands (Konsole?)

have you used exactly the same username/userid in the new install to that in the old?

@Ramchu,

KP mentioned in his other thread that he is using the KDE version:

I think the problem with firefox is that you're trying to hand deliver the bookmarks to it. First thought is that the versions is incompatible... next is that when you try to add a bookmark it finds that there is a permission problem and deletes the old (hand delivered) bookmarks and creates a new one.

My thoughts on solving this problem is to export bookmarks from your old installation of firefox and importing it into the new install. That'll probably solve whatever is going amuck.

As for the passwords. Same thing is going wrong with them... but I cant think (or am aware) of anyway to bring them to your new install without running into, and solving, the permissions problem.

If you just need to move your bookmarks and passwords form one computer to another, just install Xmarks on the old one, create an account (don't worry, it's free), tell it to keep the bookmarks on that computer, then install it on the new one and point it to the same account and tell it to keep the bookmarks on the server.  After that, any change in bookmarks or passwords on either computer will magically appear on the other computer.

And if you have a disaster and need to start over, your bookmarks and passwords are backed up on the Xmarks server, ready to sync to any computer (as long as you remember the user name and passwords for Xmarks).

You can get Xmarks here: http://www.xmarks.com/
