So since getting the 1tb sata drive in I got 2010 installed again. I have to say this time I may be at least satisfied enough with KDE 4.5 to not want to wipe it out again and go back to Debian Lenny. (I will NEVER try squeeze again) Almost all issues I had with 2010 (which were minor) are fixed. I can play cd's now and get the menu (couldn't before in any program) Performance is WAYYY up (due mostly to the new hd). Though I still don't like the way KDE has hidden some basic things (why the HELL did they separate screensaver setup to a archaic menu entry in configuration rather than by simply right clicking the desktop?) And I'm still hunting down a few programs lost since 3.5. But I'm having one issue that is a real stinker since I use it a bit.

Ark is failing. I've read about it in 1 post here but there was no resolution. When I try to open Ark either from the menu or cli I get "Unable to locate Ark's Kpart component, check your install". if you click ok it goes away and no ARK. And I use it for packaging stuff I send to people so it is fairly important. I know it's only a frontend for tar and all that but it saves me a lot of time. Anyone else know what this is about and how to fix it? I keep looking and can't find a solution.

So now I'm happy and time to finish installing my Winderz games.

Have you tried re-installing kdeutils4-ark (and possibly restart your  desktop)

If you can keep you head while all around you are losing theirs, then you have misunderstood the situation.

As an alternative, install PeaZip, it does its job (and Arks)

What happens if you open a Konsole-window, and enter the following command:
Code:
ark
If the program doesn't start, it will probably give some output - please copy and paste it then to a forum post here....

For your configuration problems: if you don't know where to find the right configuration thing in the KDE Configuration Centre, just go to the search box in the right upper corner, and type the thing you're looking for (I assume here you know the exact term you want to use); all things will grey out, except for the thing(s) you want to configure  Smiley

That's the thing. No, no output in the terminal. It just crashes. Otherwise I would post the output. Just the error message box. I've since completely removed ark and now have Peezip loaded. Looks like that will do the job.

And in regards to the search. i'm not having a problem DOING the search I'm having a problem finding a RESPONSE to this problem. There's only 1 post on here regarding it (with no fix) and only 3 references (other than the one here) on Google. And none have any kind of a fix.

Your new install of 2010.12 what? KDE full, Gnome, Zen, XFCE Phoenix? Are you mixing packages ie kde 4.5.4 and KDE 4.5.5 ark? If so then you should do a full update and reboot.

No, I mean: when you're looking for a setting in KDE Configuration Center (Configure your Desktop), you can open that Center, and there'll be a search box in the right upper corner (I do NOT mean searching on this forum - however it should be something you do before posting; but you do already so....)
If I want for example, change my settings for the screensaver, I open the Center, and start typing "saver" in the search box; then all things will grey out, except for the thing(s) you need (in this case Hardware >> Screen >> Screen saver)

Try a reinstall of kdeutils4-ark, kpartx and kdelibs4. Reboot after the install is complete.

Once again you got me Tex. I installed with the 2010.12 KDE cd. I thought I had updated. But when I went into synaptic it showed KDElibs and Kpartx were still 4.5.4 so I updated all kde stuff (still need to update some other things like vlc and gstreamer) but all I had to do was log out and restart xserver. Oh and I reinstalled Ark. Sure enough it came up fine now. Just wondering how it updated Ark but not the other Kde stuff when i installed. Either way it's fixed. Bear with me. It still takes some getting used to the rolling release idea. I'm so used to packages being static in Debian. I had a heck of a time trying to explain it to my latest convert even. But thanks. I'll be around.

You shouldn't do partial updates. Do a complete update, or problems can start popping up.

Normally I would have. But this was weird because that's how it ended after my clean install. It seemed to install ark new but not the new kdelibs with it or kpart. I hadn't even got to the updating part yet. was just making sure the system was ok with the new hard drive. I hadn't started the update at all. Gonna set all updates to go and let it run with it tonight. but for now it's fine.

I had the same issue and reinstalling kdelibs4 fixed it.  Thanks Neal!
