50 gbs for linux sounds good to me if the data partition you mention can be accessed by linux, which probably is now

to wipe linux you need to delete / and swap and if you have /home partition and this can be done with the draklive menu you mentioned in expert mode, well in basic too

the boot menu, i think it was mentioned on another post, i can't remember where

usually there is a command in windows 7 to rewrite that boot menu and remove linux completely

I installed 2010.12 PCLinuxOS afterwards and so it became dual boot. During the install process, I wasn't paying too much attention to sizes and allocations and honestly did notice (or cared to explore) the "expert mode" of draklive-install at the time. It was just recently that I discovered <gasp!> I allocated a so very little room for this mighty OS -- less than 50GB (the "defaults" of draklive-install) for /, /home and /swap.

Hi,

About half the people you talk to would only create a "/" partition.  No "/home" or "swap" partition.
And install Linux to that precreated partition, say 20 gb, and run everything off of the "/" partition.

Then create a 50 gb Linux ext4 partition for file or data storage, mounting it to say, /filestorage.
Do that after the installation is successful.  The size is flexible.

You would still have your 250 gb W7 partition, and your  ntfs data partition, which Linux can use
also.   See how it looks on paper.   Make the ntfs data partition bigger or smaller and the ext4 filestorage
partition for Linux bigger or smaller, whatever you prefer.

It seems to make upgrades and backups a little easier to do and discern.   But, like I said, the
majority will setup a /home and swap partition.

Cheers,

Just some additional info for a 200 gb install.   I'd do it without a swap and /home.
Trivial in some respects.  Mine would work fine and smooth with 20 gb for /,  and the
rest available just mounted somewhere in a Linux directory, you know.

Very nice HD to install on.   Follow the specs anyway.

Yes,  that's my fault.   Somehow my writing got inside the quote box.
Deleted part of the quote and it left me in there.  Didn't catch it
before I posted.  Sorry again.   The rest will be OK.

There is a Modify link, so you can fix it.

Thanks for the replies, T6 and patrick013.  Smiley

So it's clear --> I can just use the PCLinuxOS livecd to wipe the linux from my system and start all over with a bigger partition. No need for GParted. Just want to clarify: I don't want to completely remove linux from my computer (no way!). I just want to give it a lot more room to move. But if it is your opinion that 50GB is enough, then I think I can manage.  Smiley Yes, I do have access to the data partition from Linux. It's actually where I moved all the /home/(user)/documents I amassed in just a couple of weeks after my first-time installation of PCLinuxOS --- which is almost 40GB worth of files!

@old-polack -- Thanks also for the "modify" tip. Wink

If you you can find the time...

When you're finished,  in the  terminal type df.

Copy and paste the output to this thread.

I'd love  to see what you decided then.

thx

patrick

p.s. the PCLinux Configure Your Computer local disk partition manager and/or GParted
will do the same thing, LiveCD or not.   If you delete a partition it's gone, everything, no doubt about it.
Is that what you're tentative about ?   Can't  guess.   Post that df info then.

I decided to place this project on-hold for now. I figure if I just manage my files more efficiently, I don't think I need to do any wiping or reinstall of linux in the near future. Thanks again! Smiley
