Wondered if anyone else has a small problem with this edition? ........  trying to open it with Okular drives the CPU to 100% and it takes ages before the mag is navigable.
Evince objects a bit less .....  still maxs the CPU but is ready for use a bit quicker.

It may be due to the fact that it is twice the size of the previous edition when stored, and more than 3 times the size of the MythTV edition .....  maybe due to the number of colour pics in it?

Thanks to all mag staff for another great looking edition Grin

You are correct, Just19. The Feb 2011 issue of The PCLinuxOS Magazine is the largest issue we've ever put out there, in terms of the file size for the PDF download. A lot of that has to do with the comic strip feature this month (not the usual Double Take feature, which is also there this month).

I've been quite conscious about reducing image sizes as much as possible each month, without affecting the quality of the images to the point where they are not discernible. This way, we can continue to bring you as much content as possible, without putting restrictions on the number of pages each month.

Still, I find that the magazine does seem to open fairly quickly in Evince, running on my Phoenix Mini installation on an AMD 3200+ (single core) with 1.5 GB RAM. I can also assure you that I do test this monthly, before releasing the magazine.

Given my experience with it opening in Okular and Evince .....  it might appear to be an Okular specific problem.

I would like to know if my experience with Okular is universal or particular to my install.

I can't speak for anyone else, but given my results on KDE 4 on my dual core Intel laptop, Okular opens large PDF files just a bit slower than Evince.

PCLinuxOS - without rivals

I've given up on Okular for PDF files and have been happy with FoxitReader ever since. This with 4GB memory on a 4 year old dual-core box which otherwise works real nice with KDE4 (not to mention how it flies with Phoenix!).

I tend to believe it's more of an Okular problem than the hardware specs or other configuration stuff.
