does the mic work, is it recognized by the system?

have you tested audacity?  you can force it to use a specific input

ecoalex, you did not specify which sound server you are using but if gnome defaults to alsa as in xfce, enable pulse audio under configure computer. This has always worked for me when using a webcam mike. When enabled, right click the volume adjust and open sound pref. make sure the input hardware selected is your webcam device. Under input tab, also make sure the webcam is selected. You will be able to test your mike output from the input tab or you can click the application tab and then open your sound recorder and monitor it's output from either window. Hope this helps. ken

I got it working,I had to set sound preferences on hardware to the icon of the minicam, and input to analog mono. Why it worked at first, then stopped is the question. Thanks for your suggestions.

My sound preferences change on each boot up so that the webcam mic doesn't not work.I mush change my settings from input stereo to mono.if I don't it doesn't work. What causes the sound settings to change?
