some years ago we got a minidv camera with the mentioned port
i haven't done anything with the 2 or 3 cassettes i have recorded with it
none of my pcs, my old pc and my netbook has a firewire port
in the desktop i can buy a pci card but i don't know if this is a good or a bad idea because i never worked with one before
will linux work with one? the one i can buy uses a via chipset but not sure which one so hard to ask to others and this port is form what i can remember never mentioned here, specially the way i want it
what apps can i use to take videos out the minidv cassette if i can work with it on linux?

Hi T6, in a previous PC I've been using such a PCI card for Firewire. It had the VIA chip as well. IIRC, it just worked OOTB. As for video capture, try maybe kdenlive ( http://www.kdenlive.org/), which supports input from webcams & DV-Camcorders. Here's a review of someone I know well from the Linux-Audio Users list and whose input I always appreciate: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/kdenlive-meets-studio-daveCheers, Raphael

One thing I remember is, the linux kernel includes 2 firewire stacks. I don't know if this info is also important for video capture, but for audio work with jack i.e. it depends on the FW-Chip for which of the two to utilize. Hope that this makes some sense? I'd just try it as these intefaces are really cheap as you say. If for whatever reason it shouldn't work, you're maybe able to return the card to the shop? Raphael

i tried kino and kino detects and captures video, but video has problems and audio too
the app crashes when there is empty spaces between videos, not sure what options to use to configure the app
also it crashes after 2 minutes of capture, it just hangs
i was testing another app called coriander but it says that i don't have permissions for the 1394 card

maybe dvgrab will work for you .....
search the repo for 1394 to get an idea of what packages might be relevant

isn't dvgrab a cli tool?
when i searched for it i had that impression, i am not that good with cli tools but i need a native tool to work in linux
i finally had to boot into xp, install the tool from sony and made the task, each minidv disc more or less created a folder with around 8 gbs of files, avi files, will see if i can join them with avidemux and leave them as avi or convert them to dvd

Hello T6: been using a pci firewire card in this box for 2 or 3 years. I haven't used it in several months to get anything off of the camera. But the last time I used it it worked. I use Kino to download digital video from the camera and then use Avidemux to edit it. hope this helps.

kino worked partially as you see on one of my previous replies here
after some minutes it fails and stopped the file export process, the app also had to be killed, it detects and controls the camera properly but something made it fail here
