If I enable 3d effects and install all the stuff that is required, I can "rotate" the cube and watch all the pretty stuff but does Compiz really make better use of my video card or something for watching movies?

I mean, what does Compiz really do for me?

I think only graphical effects  Roll Eyes:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compiz
http://www.compiz.org/

Purpose: fancy effects to your desktop...
And I think the watching movies capability will loose a little bit, because then Compiz also uses your video card at the same time...

... I can "rotate" the cube...
This is possible in KDE 3D effects too.

compiz offloads from cpu alot of stuff in my machine

hd video is smoother in this machine thanks to it, this machine is under the specs to play hd video(1080p)

there is many options useful in compiz like opacity, windows decoration(with emerald which is another wonder with many customizable options), zoom, show mouse, desktop wall, cube between others

also you can configure mouse and keyboard to enable actions defined in compiz, disable things also, many options

mostly it helps when you have many desktops, many apps or you have problems with your eyes and when your cpu is a little weak and your video card is doing nothing

The nice thing about compositing window managers like compiz is that 1. they offload the responsibilities of the window manager from the cpu to the gpu (stated above by t6) but 2. they offer true window shadows etc, and the ability for a 3d desktop. Most people see the 3d desktop in the form of the effects, however with new compositing and desktop effects it completely changes the computing traditional desktop metaphor. 3. the other nice thing about compositing window managers was that it ushered in a new way of computing, we now have gpu accelerated apps, cuda, and with OpenCL the gpu can be spoken to within the operating system without having to sidestep to another application to do so. The ramifications of this technology is usually only seen skin-deep (the 3d effects) but in fact there is more to it than that. Smiley
