HPG62T function keys
«

I'm trying to setup this laptop but even if I press the fn key to activate the F1 to F12 keys I cannot get the GUI back from a terminal. I mean the Ctrl + Alt +F1, which brings up the terminal, but then I cannot get back to the GUI running KDE. I have tried every key combination from F1 to F12 with the Ctrl + Alt keys but nothing works. I'm running 2010.12. The only way is to re-boot using the root command shutdown -r now from the terminal. Does anyone know a way around this?

Have you tried typing
init 5
as root?
Linux has a set of run levels, a concept dating back to the 1970s with the original UNIX.
The runlevels for PCLinuxOS are as follows:
Runlevel 0 is a complete shutdown and poweroff mode.
Runlevel 1 is a single user mode with only the
root
account active. This function is normally used for low level system administration only. No networking or graphical interface is possible here.
Runlevel 2 is a single user mode with networking and multitasking, but no graphical interface.
Runlevel 3 is a multiuser mode with networking and multitasking, and is reminiscent of early UNIX systems. This mode is typically used on servers, and anywhere a graphical interface is not required.
Runlevel 4 is not used by PCLinuxOS, but is there for consistency among other Linux/UNIX systems.
Runlevel 5 is the
normal operating mode
for PCLinuxOS. This provides a graphical interface through X11, multiuser, networking, and of course, multitasking.
Runlevel 6 tells PCLinuxOS to reboot.
In this case, your machine was running in Runlevel 3. To get the graphical interface, you want to switch to Runlevel 5, and hence, I would recommend issuing
init 5
from the console.
