no, you can chose to repartition your hdd, it will start GParted then.

However, if you want to dual boot with Win, you should first defrag your Win Partition and - if it's Vista or 7 - shrink the Windows partition with the Windows tool.

Thanks. I shrank it..Win 7.  When I install it, what do I see on reboot?  How do I choose between windows and linux?  I don't want the 'dual boot' thing as that requires a re-install of windows from what I understand.

When you install linux you direct it to use the remaining space on the HD, and partion accordingly.  By default it will setup to boot to linux.  When the system boots you will find Windows listed as an option to boot to.  This is the "wait 10 seconds, make a choice and click an arrow - or do nothing, wait 10 seconds and default boot into linux".  To dual boot you don't need to reinstall Windows - it just gets rounded up and put into its own paddock.

By the way, you can edit the 10 second delay in Control Center-Boot.  You can also change the default boot there too.

Killing the 'puter like that shouldn't do any harm.  I've been known to yank out the power cord on more than one occasion!!  Check the live cd - it should boot the computer regardless of what's on the HD, or whether it even has a HD or not.  If needs be download a fresh one - check the md5sum thingy.  Also if the boot seems to be taking a while with no change to the splash, hit the Esc button.  That puts you into verbose mode and you will be able to read any error messages, particularly at the point of "hang".

Another check to make.  As the livecd boots, choose "check the media" option.  That should prove you got a good download and a good burn.

It seems our new friend would rather quit than give a proper image a fighting chance.  Huh

Not here.  Grin

Being as this thread's a dead end, I'll give some time for those who tried to help a chance to see what's happened, then send it to the TZ.
