(Solved) CanoScan Lide 110 (Flatbed Scanner) - Two Issues I need help with

I just purchased a CanoScan Lide 110 Flatbed scanner.

First Issue I need help with

I per-checked ( http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/...&bus=any&v=&p= ) before I bought it.

Sane Supported Device:

but it requires Sane-git Access (http://www.sane-project.org/cvs.html)

To run it. I never use or downloaded from this site before.
And Could use advice and instructions from a member who has before I proceed.

I am running

Linux version 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs (root@localhost.localdomain) (gcc version 4.4.1 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Oct 21 22:42:28 CDT 2010

and found nothing in synaptic for sane-genesys.

Second Issue I need help with is

PCC Hardware Center has no listing for this scanner in KDE, it sees it, knows that it is a scanner, but that's it.

PCC Hardware > Scanner> canoscan> Run config tool gives me the following message.

"Canon CanoScan is not in scanner database, configure it manually?"

I have the original install disk that came with the scanner but it is for MAC and Windows installations.
I fried one scanner with a bad firmware installation and I do not want it to happen a second time.
And, I got less then 29 days to get it installed or return it for a refund.

I Did.

It's suppose to be completely supported which is why I bought it in the first place.

I am just trying to get the right sane back end support for the scanner, and the PCC Hardware does not list the device because it's listings stopped at CanoScan LiDE 80 which it lists it as unsupported even though the http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl states it's completely supported under the sub heading of Sane-git Access for sane-genesys.

Is the software already part of Sane-Backend Support or do I require a different Sane-Backend Download ?
And If so how do I get it for my OS and install it?

Talking with member old-polak had me check my
locate genesys
which came back with
/etc/sane.d/genesys.conf
/usr/lib/sane/libsane-genesys.so.1
/usr/lib/sane/libsane-genesys.so.1.0.21
/usr/share/man/man5/sane-genesys.5.bz2

and
rpm -qf /etc/sane.d/genesys.conf
which came back with
sane-backends-1.0.21-1pclos2010

This should mean I am currently using genesys version 1.0-21 right?
According to the Sane back End Support web site I should be using version of genesys 1.0-62.

So does anyone know where I can download it from in Synaptic ?

Or do I have to get it from Sane-git Access for sane-genesys on the developers web site?

But is all program code updates that I do not know how to install or even if it's required to get this scanner to even work correctly.

I'm sorry I don't have any answers for you, but I hope you get your scanner working.  When you do, please post your method here as I'm interested.  I have a Canon Lide 100 scanner, which I had given up hope for.

When I first checked the sane database I found that the Lide was completely unsupported.  I emailed Canon support and they replied that, essentially, they did not support Linux and had no intention of doing so.  Now I see on that page,
http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl  that there is a complete backend included in the development repository.

I would like to be able to use it as I only have Windows installed on a somewhat older laptop these days.  Everything else is Linux and I can't use the scanner (not that I have much use for it, but I'd like the option).

I have absolutely no idea what to do to use what's available there.  If you find a method please post it.

I got a Canonscan Lide 90, which I use once in a blue moon on an XP partition, which is there for that purpose only.

If you have sufficient CPU and RAM to run VirtualBox, you could create a Windows VM, install the software from the CD, then do your scanning from the VM. I do this with a Win2K VM, for an Epson scanner that has no Linux support. I use a directory shared between the VM and my PCLinuxOS host to pass the scans to the host for processing with Linux applications.

I'd prefer doing the scans in Linux, but Linux support for this scanner will never be made available. This arrangement works well, so is the next best thing.

Dito here, works well. Got a non supported Scanmaker 3880 and use the same solution.
I am normally very aware of "non Linux supported" hardware but every now and then we all step in a trap ha

I Do have sufficient CPU and RAM, Now have VirtualBox and XP running, just one problem.

The version I am using, it does not come standard with USB support for the virtual machine turned on.
Running Version 32.12_OSE r68302 of VirtualBox.

Does anyone know how to Install the USB Option Support into VitrualBox?

I have read through the Help documents for this version of VirtualBox and they have only two commands that are meant for a manual downloads and installations from the installation directory, which does not help me.

I installed it through Synaptic, and the Updater feature is also deactivated.

In the first VBox window, Click on your VM in the left pane, then in the right pane scroll to the USB section, and click that.



Use this window to check which devices you want to connect to the VM.



If you have USB devices you won't use in the VM, don't check them. In my screen shot I don't check the Unknown device because that's my webcam. I also don't check the USB mouse, as that's already in use, and will mess up the functioning between host and VM if locked to the VM only.

For now, just check the scanner. which is what I have checked in the screen shot.

You may have to reboot, to have everything load in proper order, before you can actually use the scanner. Do you have the Guest Additions installed, from the iso image that came as part of the VB installation? If not do that before rebooting, from within the running VM. Set the image as your CD/DVD device, in the Storage section of the Settings window.

So I can Access them without going through Virtual Box?

Additional question,

Does CrossOver from code weaves allow you install the support software for scanners or other odd ball devices so that could work properly in Linux? Most Windows Based Hardware is all software supported (the same as any game or office product)

I have been looking at, but here has to be a hook somewhere with that installation program if no ones been recommending it. Is there limits on the amount of software you can install or does it cause more problems then it solves? Or is there continual costs issues running the software? It's not kernel specific is it. meaning you have to re-install every time you upgrade your kernel, and pay for a new license to keep using your programs?

If anyone wanted to try it, is it available in our disto through Synaptic?
