I daily visit several streaming audio sites ie "oneplace.com" "youtube" etc. In the last few days my ability to hear streaming audio from these sites has stopped. I've installed nothing but the updates via synaptic. Anyone else had this problem? Any ideas! I do have system sound. I am booted (on another hard drive) into PCLOS2009 with KDE3.5 and am having no problems.
AMD dual core processor, asus m3a78em mb with onboard sound. 4 gigs ram I am using ALSA "snd_hda_intel audio driver. The video shows up on youtube but no audio.
I am having my problem using KDE4.5 desktop, but also had the same problem switching to the E17 desktop...both on the same installation.

can you hear audio when playing local files? what audio/video player do u use?
what program do you use for steaming? is it a web browser? try a different one and see if the same problem is still there

muungwana, thanks for you quick response to my problem. yes amarok does play audio and and the audio tracks of my video files. My video players however (dragon player, kaffeine, etc) report a segmentation fault when attempting to play the same video files. Online in Firefox or in Chromium browser when I attempt to stream an audio file the start arrow of the online player blinks and the file refuses to play. With Youtube the video plays but no audio comes out.

open the terminal and type "firefox" to start firefox from the terminal and then try to stream something and then look at the terminal and report back any output you see.
Maybe you have a misconfigured sound system and you are using a wrong sound driver, have you tried to go to pcc audio section and reconfigure the sound driver? what driver is in use now?

from the terminal I typed firefox then navigated to Youtube...still no audio. upon closing firefox I noted nothing in the Konsole terminal except my original "firefox" entry and a new prompt.
from the PCC audio configuration file I see: Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound card (ATI Technologies Inc|SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)).
Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver (default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel") that is the driver installed in the "driver" box. I have not tried to reconfigure the audio file since it works with system audio, Skype, and with Amarok.

you are using a correct driver, do you have a package called "aoss" installed? install it if you dont and try again
do you know when exactly it stopped working? a check of synaptic's install history could shed some light on what package update broke your sound
try log in to another account and then try to stream something and reports if it works or not
what does this command give you?
lspci

Well this just sucks...I powered down my machine...restarted and logged in. I started firefox and shazam oneplace.com streaming files opened and worked....youtube audio was back and working correctly. I successfully played local video files in SMPlayer, divx, and wma. also Totum movie player works with my video files....however neither Dragon Player or Kaffeine will play any of the local video files...still get the "segmentation fault" error. Maybe I have a hardware bug. I was sure it was an update from synaptic that was at fault. Sorry.

so your audio problem appear to be gone for the moment?
If Smplayer works as expected but those two fail then the problem is most likely due to them using a wrong video output driver. Both of these apps that crash do not have an option to change the setting and hence i have no idea on how to make them use a different video output.
Why not use smplayer or any other video player that works as your default video player? which one do you use now?

first I want to thank you for all of your help and want to let you know that yes it worked this time after a power down and reboot of the system but that was not the first time today that I powered the system down and rebooted it without success. I also soft started the system a couple of times with the restart command and had no luck. I agree that if I can make my local files operate under any of the available players it will be fine. One thing I did the last time was to disable a add on in firefox that allows you to capture youtube streams. I can't see how that would affect local files being played with other players but oh well. I dont wish to get a reputation on this forum of not trying things before I cry wolf. If I find a definate solution to this problem I will post it back to the forum. In the meantime I'll mark this subject as possibly fixed.
