I have an Acer laptop which I bought second hand two months ago.
It had vista installed, but that came of and PCLOS was installed.
All went well till last Saturday, when the Nvidia 8600GT graphics card decided to die.
After reading various forums, it seems these Nvidia cards are notorious for failures.
I got on to the bay and found an ATI 3650 which is a good replacement for the Nvidia card, but it will not arrive till Friday.
On one of the forums I looked at one poster added a link to Utube showing how to get the nvidia card working again by baking it in an oven for twenty minutes at 200C, as I had another card on its way, I had nothing to loose by trying the baking process out.
With some fresh artic silver on the die I placed it  back in and fired the laptop up and bingo it worked, so if it dies again I will have a spare ATI card to put in its place.

that is a very dangerous procedure you did there

the same old trick to fix fractured soldiering points used with the old xbox 360

it will only work 2 or 3 times and then parts will fail completely

when you are ready to change the video card, there is some posts explaining how to do it, change form nvidia driver to amd driver
