I installed gnome-power-manager from Synaptic, hoping to be able to get my eeePC 701 4G to suspend when I close the lid.

It refuses to start its GUI, and gives the following warnings in the terminal:

[jeff@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost jeff]# gnome-power-manager
TI:09:25:49   TH:0x9197418   FI:gpm-main.c   FN:main,230
 - This program cannot start until you start the dbus session service.

This is usually started automatically in X or gnome startup when you start a new session.
Traceback:
   gnome-power-manager [0x8061ff1]
   gnome-power-manager [0x8055f77]
   /lib/i686/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe6) [0xb6729a36]
   gnome-power-manager [0x804da11]
[root@localhost j

So, what is this "dbus session service", and how can I get it to auto-start?

EDIT: I checked Synaptic, and dbus and e-dbus are both installed. But not started.

Menu > More Applications > Configuration > Configure Your Computer (PCC). When it opens - System > Manage system services by enabling or disabling them.

@Neal:
Thanks for the reply. It seems logical that the dbus service would be in that list - but it's not.

On the other hand, if I open lxtask, there it is. Both dbus-daemon and dbus-launch are sleeping contentedly, taking up 1.8 MB of memory.

And I can now run gnome-power-management. I don't know what has changed. Suspend is selected for lid closure. And now it works.
