choppy video

i am trying to help a friend with their aspire 1. they are stubbornly stuck on kde4 even though its a little slow to me. the problem is she watches a lot of videos on the acer (rather riskay type vids i might add) so the choppy video is kind of depressing her. i have tried some tweaks like the "helenuristic greedy" options etc that worked on mine but i am still using kde3 with great results. her netbook has 1.5 gig of ram (allready took it apart for her and did all the upgrades she could afford, what a pain) i also tried the add the line "import_batch" or somthing like that in etc/profile that i found in the search results. intel atom n270 512kb cache running @ 1595.846 with 3191.69 Bogomips.  videocard Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller. the present fps is like 110 to 118. that is a joke in anybodys netbook. ill keep trying but not sure why the tweaks that work in kde3 dont improve the fps in kde4. well iv got to get ahold of youcantoo for some webpage work he's doing for me, will check back later.

that is soo 2009 

if those videos are flash, be sure to disable hardware acceleration in flash

also be sure to set the right driver for that video card, it should be using the intel 815 and later if i remember correctly

in general flash is slow because it runs only on cpu(mediocre performance on lnux also) and a atom 270 is a slow cpu so i recomend to explain her how to download the videos she wants to see, using flash and downloadhelper addon is a very easy task, the video on hard disk will work perfectly on fullscreen using vlc or any other app

Try using

Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"

in the option section for your card (which should be set to use the intel driver)

For the machine I feel you need to switch to either the LXDE relesae or Phoenix. as things have moved on in internetland and an older release with older libraries may well start to struggle with all the changes that go on.

OK will try these. yes the kde3 is going to go bye bye in liew of the much perfered kde4 but not untill the video performance issues are solved. if i would have known about the intel video card being so crappy i would have waited to get a better netbook but this one was a great deal as it came with a sony external dvd writer that was a hundred bucks by itself. got both the netbook and dvd player with carrying case, ram for the upgrade and a bigger harddrive for the upgrade for 199 bucks so i jumped at it. i do like kde4 much better than 3 after getting used to it.  will check back and post the results.

on netbooks there is not much choice really, intel or intel so you didn't do anything wrong, my netbook fortunately had a gma3150, enough for me but still i use the trick i mentioned to download videos and avoid flash

about the sony drive, don't be surprised when it dies suddenly, i had very bad experiences with those

i had luck with a lg external drive, very cheap i must say, more than a year traveling with me, used i many pcs, all ok

OK so i tried the suggestions and still only getting 104 to 106 fps. im thinking about trying the enlightenment desktop just to see if i have any better performance from the vid card but will wait for a little longer in case some poor hungover all knowing kenobee comes along with the super fix. I certainly hope your wrong about the sony dvd T6 but hey ill just get another one and you know the lg i got for my desktop works great so i would have to agree with you that the lg stuff is a pretty good deal considering the price of the hardware. intel or intel hmmm. sounds almost like some kind of conspiracy or market fixing or somthing like that. oh well onward with this crappy performing vid card, funny with the kde3 kernels i could tweak the settings and get 1300 fps at 24 bit i wonder what gives. maybe its that buggy bios not reporting the proper ammount of onboard ram to the os. ill have to look into that. thanks T6.

no, that is not the case, atom was a new platform and no one offered anything saimilar untill now, amd finally woke up

recent models of atom offers nvidia chipsets and new amd models offer huge video card saving power at levels that if true, won't have competition

those 104 fps, how are you measuring that in kde4?

it seems that you could use rasterblaster package but not sure if can help you

are you using compiz or kwin desktop effects?

are you using qt or oxygen?

well it doesnt look like lou is having much progress. i will have him try the other kernrls i think thats what he said or the kde3 thing but thats so ghetto looking to me like cartoonish u know but my videos really suck right now in linux. he put a double boot? so i can use xp, kind of cartoonish too me too u know. my boyfriend hates windblows (thats what he calls it). i dont know about compiz or oxygen or any of the other stuff so lou will have to answer that. i did find the etc/X11/xorgconf file but it looked like teknical stuff to me so i didnt mess with it. anyway thanks for u guys-girls? helping him-us, Sheila.

Are all the videos DVD's or internet stuff ?    My 300 download connection for internet is (barely) adequate.
The 600 download connection ($19.95/mo. AT&T) is supposed to be OK.  If I go to the 600 speed those
videos would 100%.   DVD's should be OK with a good processor shouldn't it ?    Try smooth scrolling
on Firefox usually helps too.   Rip the videos and play them back, who knows ?

Just a quick idea.
