So, my old notebook came with vista 64 and I put pclinuxos on it in dual boot. I only have one HD.
I just did a upgrade to windows 7 64-bit.
So, of course, it trashed my MBR.
So I put in the pclinuxos livecd cd and boot.
I try:-
1) Configure your computer, Boot, Set up boot system etc. - No GRUB boot menu on reboot.
2) Desktop utilities, redo-MBR - reboot - No GRUB boot menu on reboot.
Hmmm...
I run the livedCD again, pick the shell and do a grub, get the prompt, do find /boot/grub/stage2 - file not found.
Any ideas how I can re-install the MBR ?
Yes, I can mount the linux partition, go to /boot/grub and look at the menu.lst. The problem seems to be after the upgrade to windows 7, it took over the MBR and GRUB can't overwrite the MBR now.
Is this another cunning Microsoft ploy so they can only play ?

there was a article on the pclinux magazine mentioning some tools, there is other posts talking about this same topic i remember someone using this app, smart boot manager http://btmgr.sourceforge.net/index.php3?body=document.htmlthis another could be helpful http://www.boot-us.com/screensh.htmanyway, before doing anything else read all info possible and if possible do backups before changing partitions if required

From the liveCD, in a terminal, as root, start with posting the results of; [root@localhost ~]# fdisk -l <Enter> so we can see the partition layout as it is currently.

Also lurking, I just lost my W7 boot loader an hour ago.
I checked the menu.1st on a working and non working laptop, and they were both the same.
Was going to use w7 install later, then noticed this timely post.
I won't hijack it, just lurk.
Happy xmas!,

"I checked the menu.1st ..."
Just a note: The file is named menu.lst. l but not 1.

OK - people, you need to watch out for this. This is a quick heads up.
I solved the issue..thanks old-polack
When I used the livecd, I misplaced my latest one. So I used one that I had labeled pclinux2009. No, I don't have the exact info on that yet. I will need to boot it again and try and figure out the version.
When I tried to do the grub, get the prompt, do find /boot/grub/stage2 - it gave me file file not found.
I found another one that I hadn't labeled. It looks like the current version, but again I will have to get back to you after I check it out.
The point is. I tried the 1) Configure your computer, Boot, Set up boot system etc. - No GRUB boot menu on reboot. and the 2) Desktop utilities, redo-MBR - reboot - No GRUB boot menu on reboot.
Just to be thorough. When I tried old-polack's find /boot/grub/stage2 etc. it worked. (But I can't find the link at the moment.)
and rebooted it worked.
So there MAY be issues with older pclinuxos iso's with respect to grub commands. Again, this is just a quick heads up.

the pclinux 2009 version is not supported now
the redo mbr tool in that version and the current version are quite different
