I installed win32 codecs - all    from synaptic and youtube still sounds perfect but the flash video in temp has no sound.

This is very strange....  Cry
I save such files via Download Helper add-on for FireFox.

Taking the file from /tmp sometimes leaves me without sound as you described. I wonder if the sound is saved in a different file in /tmp? Undecided

I will now try but this has not happened to me yet on KDE...

Each flv is 3 0r 4 files in /tmp. If you know which files, you can move them to your video folder.

OK I got sound using Pclinuxos flv player and converter that uses Mplayer.

Playing with vlc there is still no sound.
It has got to be a failure of vlc that I do not know how to solve.
This has never happened to me, but it's all good.I'll use mplayer  Wink

Thx so much guys for your help and interest.

Phoenix runs really well on this old rocker!

If this is solved for you, please edit your first post in this thread to add [SOLVED] to the title.
