I installed again for something to do (really ought to start doing this for the team..).

I did it with my PCLOS-2010.?-kde4 remaster.  Got my live-cd desktop, advanced install, made my three partitions (os, swap, home).  Of course on our/my own remaster, all the programs are back, without installing them again.  Including that my wireless was automatically up again.

Called up Synaptic, and clicked on "mark all upgrades".  Wow, 728 file update...!  This is why there are periodic iso releases... After it was done, I dragged a .jpg to the desktop, wanting to click on the line where it let's you make it the desktop background.  Wouldn't do it, so tried it again.  After the second time my screen went totally gray, with nothing showing.  Rebooted and an all black screen with my mouse.  But no right-click menu... just nothing.

Re-installed and did this whole thing over again.  Dragged a .jpg to the desktop, and it did the whole thing over again...!  Well, I did not want to install for the third time, nor start with a fresh 2010.12.  Played around quite a bit....... got the taskbar back, the system tray, and even the quick-launch.  BUT now the programs open in the taskbar have a icon+name to them.   I so want just the icon back....please.

What hopefully easy way must a take to make this happen...?

Are you using "Smooth Tasks" plasmoid (it's the default)? It that case, check the settings for Smooth Tasks, there's an option to change the appearance of the programs shown. Maybe you resetted them or they didn't get saved in your LiveCD.

Also, are you using folder view or a desktop activity?

No, it seems smooth-tasks has left as a result.  Right-clicking on the taskbar, shows Task Manager settings

Right-clicking on the desktop shows my Desktop Settings.

I guess installing the "Smooth Tasks" plasmoid (widget) in your taskbar can bring you back the "icons only" view. You're talking about running apps, aren't you?

The activity should not influence the appearance of your taskbar, afaik.

That did it.  I honestly didn't know it was a widget, otherwise I would of done it sooner.  Thanks...!
