Hi Andy,

Was thinking of dropping it further, started with 384.

Terry

Good Man!

Let us know when You hit the "Rock Bottom". Is it installed or LiveCD / iso?

Just ran in a new VM with 128 MB RAM, but all was not so smooth.  I was a bit surprised as I thought it would run well, but unfortunately for me it was too slow to use.  I also experienced lockups. In particular, when attempting to start PCC, either by mod+f7 or netering 'pcc' in cli terminal. The system would just hang, the clock in the systray stopped. This also happened when attempting to run Midori (mod+f1).

To test further I created 2 further new VM instances, with 128 and 160 MB of RAM. The 160 MB ran OK.  I did notice that the clock stalled for 3 seconds while starting PCC, but caught up once started. I could make changes successfully once it was running.  The 2nd VM with 128 MB also had lockups.  I was able to get into PCC, but stalled when attempting to access the System menu.  I left it for 5 minutes to be sure.

I am sure Hootiegibbon will share few of his secrets when less busy pushing iso to its limits...

It takes a bit of tweaking...

1st what I may suggest is to use alt + ctrl + f1 to move to tty1. Log in as user. su Yourself to root and run pcc from console. Lets not forget that PCLinuxOS Control Center has a nice CLI interface that can be used on those old machines or via ssh connections... When done type in exit and press enter to logout from root and then again type in exit and press enter till you see TTY1 login screen again.

Alt + Ctrl + F8 should take You back to the TTY8 with X running...

2nd. You can't expect that 128 MB machine will be a speed daemon when using X apps. Iso is filled up with CLI apps. The finest ones I must add. This iso requires advanced skills or a lot of learning or more resources. I mean You can install konversation or use pre-installed Irssi. Both will allow You to visit Irc but one of them won't run under 128 MB ram. You can use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird instead of Alpine and W3M but this means You need MORE ram... This iso is really great... but You need to love digging...

Hope this helps.

I had the same experience as TerryH in VirtualBox.

However, I've now done a HD install and have it running on a Dell Latitude LS:

Intel Mobile Pentium III; 128MB RAM; NeoMagic NM2200 Video controller; SVGA TFT display with max. res. of 800 x 600(!).

It runs surprisingly well considering the low spec of this laptop - quite an interesting challenge to install anything on this as there's no CD drive
(I don't have a connectable external) and the BIOS doesn't have any facility for booting from the (single) USB port.

Of course its pretty slow in comparison with more recent hardware but usable for basic surfing (midori) / email (Sylpheed).
YouTube videos are, of course, very choppy - wouldn't expect anythibng else with this video setup. Wireless was a doddle to
set up using a Linksys badged Atheros card in the PC Card slot.

Only minor issue I have is that the desktop background doesn't quite fit on this tiny screen so I can't read some of the MOD key
references on the left hand side and the bottom of the login box runs off the bottom of the screen.

I'd tried a few other distros on this before, E17, XFCe (both too slow to be usable), even Slitaz (booted like lightening, and ran quite
well, but a little flakey). All in all this is a brilliant solution to bringing what was little more than poor excuse for a doorstop back to life!

Andy,

Thanks for the tty1 tip.  I did run pcc through cli.  I'm trying to use an xterm console as much as possible for running programs, they seem to start a it quicker.

14four - thanks for Your review. Sounds like You had to hack'n'slack Your way to get to the point where You are now. Well done. I am sure Hootiegibbon will appreciate Your input.

TerryH - No problem. If there is a X server running on TTY8 and You are logged into it and You will type in pcc (even tho its) in a terminal window (CLI) there is a good chance (if the X server is not borked) that the GUI version of PCC will come up. This will eat more resources. Now if You move to TTY1 (or 2 or 3 or 4, 5, 6)... and start pcc from there... You will get the cli version of it. This will be bit poorer version as some options are not available but its much lighter.

Regards.

Andy

P.S. For people who want to learn more CLI... Terryh - You already have it Wink.

Andy,

I need a little more help to be able to switch to tty1.  Any attempts to switch to tty1 in the VM is not working in the VM. When I enter alt + ctrl + f1, it effects the host system, not the VM.

Thanks for your assistance.
