I was in the process of adding Abiword and decided to download the updates from Synaptic while I was at it.  The problem is that now my system will not start.  I received an error message that states:

"The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE: Temp directory (/tmp) is out of disc space. KDE is unable to start."  I click the OK button and received the following pop up:

"Could not start ksmserver, check your installation."

The odd thing is that I am able to start as "root" user.

I checked the root folder and it stated that I had 11.8 gigs, but that there were 0 mb free (100% used).  How do I fix this problem?

opie,
You might try logging in as root and removing the offending files chocking up the /tmp folder.  Smiley

The cause may have been k3b temp file settings, update rpm files saved during update (setting in synaptic) or similar.

Run bleachbit. It will recover some space for you.

I just checked the temp file and it shows 5.9 gb.  I have no idea how that file got so large.

When I open Synaptic I get a pop-up that tells me that I have multiple versions of a list of files installed.  It states that the listed packages will not cleanly install unless I leave only one version.  How do I know which version to delete?  The list of packages are:

"alsa-plugins-doc", "virtuoso-opensource", "libfd2", "thai-data", "iptables", "glib-gettexture", "lensfun", "liblensfun0"

I received this warning the before updating my files last time but just clicked OK and continued with the update. Could this be the problem?  Should I delete the offending files before downloading and running bleachbit?  How do I know which of the duplicate versions to delete?  Where are those files located?

You need to run dupeclean. Look in Menu > Software Center for Dupeclean-GUI. If you do not see it, use kdesu dupeclean in konsole.

I ran bleachbit and it reduced my Home/Temp file to 24 kb.  I ran bleachbit for root and it did not clear up that much space.   I checked back to my root/temp file and it still has 5.8 gb in it.  I get the same warning as before when I try to login to my user account.

Did you run dupeclean?

Yes.  I ran dupclean.

If the root/tmp file only contains temporary files would there be any harm in just selecting all of the files and deleting the 5.8 gb of temporary files and folders that are in there?

Delete everything in /tmp  root/tmp and  home/your-user-name/tmp  then press alt control backspace twice and reboot from the login menu.

Have you been running k9copy? It always leaves a copy of the shrunken DVD in the /tmp/user-kde/k9copy folder that exceeds 4GB. I'm sure there are also others that pile on very large files all at once, but that's the first one I look for when space becomes a problem.

Manually deleting the files from the root/temp folder did the trick.  I was able to determine that the large space was being used up from flash files from the internet.  I am now able to boot as user.  Thank you for your help on this.  I wonder why bleachbit did not delete those files?
