I run a netbook with limited screen area. Each forum page has approximately 3-4 inches of extra space at the top (probably for aesthetic reasons). As a result, I have to scroll down a full page to see what I am interested in - ie this new message area, results of search, etc.
It would be really nice to have a more compressed page available for netbook users.

Have you tried the different forum themes to see which one may suit best?

to gain more space on the screen i have my taskbar to autohide and this gives me around 500 pixels to show content
i have only buttons with address bar and menu in firefox, no bookmarks or other bars
and when that is not enough i press F11 in firefox to go fullscreen
that gives me the whole 600 pixels to show content
sometimes this is not enough but it is the way this netbooks are and have a alternative website for netbooks only would be hard on the website maintainers, this sites are not free afik

Towards the top right of the forum screen, there is a small " - " (minus button) just under the navigation bar, you can click that to compact the headers if you haven't already done so, that gives back about two inches on my screen, probably a little less on yours but should help some. Also, i've noticed that Firefox's various toolbars take up a lot of space, Chromium's seem smaller to start with, and there is an option in preferences to use compact headers and borders, so the actual website portion of my screen, starts only an inch away or so from the top. Hope this helps!

Try pressing F11, it gives you full screen, press F11 again and you will be back to where you started. The banner width is for the ads. That's staying, I'm sure. Galen

Way cool. I never knew about the "-" button. At least now I can tell when the page has refreshed (about an inch of usable space at the bottom.) Yeah, I knew about autohide, but I don't like to do without the bookmarks toolbar.

In Firefox go to View>Toolbars>Customize and change to small icons. Another couple pixels there.

I installed "Tiny Menu" addon and put everything from the navigation toolbar into the menu tool bar (wouldn't work the other way round). Thus you can save one bar. If it don't bother you, you could also hide the tab bar.
Also try "Tab Mix Plus" Addon which lets you tweak the tabs and tab bar more than the original settings.
"Stylish" addon might be another option to customize website behaviour to your likings, but I haven't played with it.
Chromium puts the tab bar in the window decoration, saving some space in height, two. Worth a try. I have seen an article about rekonq using window tabbing in KDE to move the tabs to the top, maybe investigate about that also.
Cheers,
Aguila

I use the Bookmarks Toolbar Button 1.0 addon. It is very simple indeed - just one icon which can be dropped into the main toolbar, and it's sole purpose is to "toggle" the bookmark folders into view or hide them. You can find it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/55716/

Yes, that's what is making mine so compact up at the top, yet I still have all controls, address bar, and I also enable the bookmarks bar because it's still so nicely compact.
