« on: October 31, 2010, 06:56:26 AM »

just got myself a Fujitsu lifebook A530 notebook... its a nice piece of machine... my install went so fine and im still exploring around...
but i found out that 3D doesnt work on it!!!
i installed compiz fusion and all its group but it doesnt start in KDE!! when i go (pcc-hardware-config 3D desktop effects) i cant chose the compiz fusion option... only bo 3D effects option available!!
even when i try to enable compositing using kwin from KDE control center it shows that its disabled... when i click resume effects i get a message that its been disabled by another application... then i try again a couple of times.. it shows that effects are active but they are not actually!!! nothing works!!!
when i try in konsole to get background transparency from options it says that this is not supported!!
is this for real?? the video card on this notebook doesnt support 3D???
im using the default driver which is intel 810 and later!!
waiting ur reply

Did you install the task-3ddesktop package?

check in

Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  > Default Applications >

and check that you have KWin as your Window Manager

Or, you could try - if you haven't already done so - installing the fusion-icon from Synaptic.

When it's installed go to your main Menu > More Applications > Configuration and select the Fusion Icon.

That should drop an icon into your panel (right hand side) from where you can choose your Window Manager (Compiz or KWin) and it may then possibly "kick start" the 3D effects. You can also use Emerald Themes from that icon.

You may need to restart your desktop

Possibly my friend, possibly.  Intel graphics do appear to cause issues with a number of systems.

But your system looks more than capable of handling 3d stuff

What KDE version of PCLinuxOS are you running ? Is it fully updated?

You could try creating a new user account (or pop into the root account) and see if the 3d works in there. If it does it may point to something in your own setup

Edit - just a thought - is there anything in the Bios which may help?

Im using KDE4 fully updated version through synaptic
i tried the root account and even made a new account but no way to start 3D:-(
what can i check in BIOS???
im thinking now to reinstall the system....
i just downloaded the full E17 iso and will start to update it and install the task-KDE4 and compiz fusion group and on my vertual box... when done ill make a remaster and try to install it on my notebook and see... maybe its the install
(my current install came from the beta version of E17 and added the task-KDE4 and all the other stuff plus all the updates till today... can this be the reason?)

i was thinking about the model of the notebook, page of the manufacturers with hardware specs, like this

https://globalsp.ts.fujitsu.com/dmsp/docs/ds-lifebook-a530.pdf

is it a i3?  if that is the case there is another post mentioning poor support from intel with the integrated video card, seems to be that i5 suffers the same problem, afik the i7 doesn't join video card and cpu and avoids the problem

the datasheet doesn't mention the specific model, seems to be a intel hd4500 or more recent

it should be perfectly possible to run 3D on compiz, my netbook can and is only a 3150

can i get the 3D effects or not on this laptop??
btw... i have the task KDE minimal installed here.. shall i install the task-KDE extra?? or any other software??

"can i get the 3D effects or not on this laptop??"

of course you can, when intel provides working drivers

i mentioned another post with same i3 cpu/gpu, can't find it to give you more information

maybe you can find it doing a search with more patience than i

a stupid question pops up here... is there a way to push them or any way to order or nag or plead? Huh Cool
is there a way to follow this issue up with anyone who can fix it?? a forum or such a thing?

yes, that seems to be the post i remember, there is another but can't remember, maybe it is only that

i just found this interesting post

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,82291.msg682657.html#msg682657

about intel working faster to provide newer drivers, they usually support linux fast but you already know my opinion about intel

the only thing they are doing well now is atoms with old video cards(what i'm using right now)

I just ran into the same problem. You need to install the Drak3D package. After you do, you will have the option to select "Compiz Fusion". Select that, and log out. When you log back in, you will have 3D Desktop efects.
