I would have printed out the humongous article on the CLI, but it is in horizontal format, and would not lend itself to any kind of binder that could be useful as a study guide.  It needs to be in portrait format, so it can be put into a looseleaf binder, or one of the special ones that imitate a spiral binder.  Then you could lay it flat on a table, and take notes.  The way it is, you could
put it in a looseleaf, but it would be extremely inconvenient to work from.  Have you ever tried to work from such a format?
I have.  It stinks!  With so much work , it should be made available in usable form.  I would even consider buying it ready-bound, if it were in portrait format.  (Depending on price, of course--Something under $50 might make it attractive, and if you told me $25
I'd send a check today!)  If you do publish it in hard copy form, please email me at dmcgarrett at optonline.net

I'm assuming you're talking about the Command Line Interface Special Edition of the magazine. I don't know what pdf viewer you're using. If you use Adobe's reader, there is an option in the menu, View > Rotate View. You can choose clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on your preference. Should print the way you see it on the screen, but double-check your printer settings beforehand.

I had not noticed the horizantal format until reading this.

I had always viewed pdf documents with "fit page width".

I see on choosing 100% view that it is indeed landscape and not portrait.

I, for one, am working with it in landscape.  I had it ring bind and for all purposes it is A3 format.  But I can also just read it page by page - in landscape.

I am not sure what the fuss is about ...  Huh

Since 2006 all mags are in landscape.  Nobody ever complained about it.  That would mean people reckon it is fine.  Since you are the only one I can't see it change in a flash ... no need.

The truth is out there ... PCLinuxOS!

dougmack,

Thank you for your opinion.

The PCLinuxOS Magazine is an ezine, and as such, is designed to be distributed electronically, via download. And, as with most other things related to PCLinuxOS, it is free to anyone who chooses to download it.

The magazine staff, including myself, are volunteers, who also put forth the effort to put out a monthly magazine for the PCLinuxOS community for free. Because we volunteer our time and efforts to put out the magazine, you might be able to imagine that we also have to hold down jobs and life outside of the magazine. Therefore, while I regret that you do not find the format of the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition to suit your tastes, we have neither the resources nor the time to produce the magazine in multiple formats (landscape and portrait).

Personally, I have done as longtom has done, and printed out the entire contents of the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition to serve as a reference source as I further my own command line skills. I have found that it works quite well for that purpose, which is why the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition was created. While it may serve as a great tutorial and educational course on the command line, that is not the intent of the issue; rather, it's intent is to help PCLinuxOS users learn to use the command line, to help eliminate the fear some folks have of the command line, and to serve as a reference source.

To me, it would be a serious omission to NOT produce the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition, given the high quality of articles that Pete Kelly, a.k.a. critter, produced over the course of the last year. Over that last year, critter produced quality articles that had something of interest in them for everyone, even for command line veterans. Since those articles originally appeared in The NEW PCLinuxOS Magazine, it was also fitting that the articles appear using the same layout that the magazine has used for the past year.

If you look around at other ezines from other distros, you will see that most of them also use a landscape orientation in their format as well, since this best fits the display medium they were/are intended for: the user's computer screen. Printing is optional, since they are intended to be read while displayed on a computer screen that, in 99% of the cases, is also in a landscape orientation.

If you want to print the articles out using a portrait orientation, I would recommend that you visit the HTML version of the magazine for the month that the articles appeared. The twelve articles ran, sequentially and monthly, starting with the October, 2009 issue of the magazine, and progressing to the September 2010 issue. From the HTML version of the magazine, you can print out each installment of the series, until you have all 12 parts printed out. Doing it this way will enable you to have the articles printed in a portrait orientation.

You, dougmack, seem like a well-versed and bright individual. If you would ever like to join the group of volunteers who put out the magazine monthly, as well as contribute to additional special editions in the future, we would welcome you with open arms.

Sincerely,

Paul Arnote [parnote]

If anybody would like the original, open office-writer source, that I submitted to Parnote for the magazine then I would be more than happy to supply it so that you can format it as you would like.

Just send me a pm through the forum  Smiley

Similarly, If anybody has any difficulty following the articles then I would be more than willing to try to help.

dougmack, If you take me up on my offer, send the $25 to Texstar  Cheesy

Thanks, Just19. I think critter's solution is even better.
