dougmack,
Thank you for your opinion.
The PCLinuxOS Magazine is an ezine, and as such, is designed to be distributed electronically, via download. And, as with most other things related to PCLinuxOS, it is free to anyone who chooses to download it.
The magazine staff, including myself, are volunteers, who also put forth the effort to put out a monthly magazine for the PCLinuxOS community for free. Because we volunteer our time and efforts to put out the magazine, you might be able to imagine that we also have to hold down jobs and life outside of the magazine. Therefore, while I regret that you do not find the format of the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition to suit your tastes, we have neither the resources nor the time to produce the magazine in multiple formats (landscape and portrait).
Personally, I have done as longtom has done, and printed out the entire contents of the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition to serve as a reference source as I further my own command line skills. I have found that it works quite well for that purpose, which is why the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition was created. While it may serve as a great tutorial and educational course on the command line, that is not the intent of the issue; rather, it's intent is to help PCLinuxOS users learn to use the command line, to help eliminate the fear some folks have of the command line, and to serve as a reference source.
To me, it would be a serious omission to NOT produce the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition, given the high quality of articles that Pete Kelly, a.k.a. critter, produced over the course of the last year. Over that last year, critter produced quality articles that had something of interest in them for everyone, even for command line veterans. Since those articles originally appeared in The NEW PCLinuxOS Magazine, it was also fitting that the articles appear using the same layout that the magazine has used for the past year.
If you look around at other ezines from other distros, you will see that most of them also use a landscape orientation in their format as well, since this best fits the display medium they were/are intended for: the user's computer screen. Printing is optional, since they are intended to be read while displayed on a computer screen that, in 99% of the cases, is also in a landscape orientation.
If you want to print the articles out using a portrait orientation, I would recommend that you visit the HTML version of the magazine for the month that the articles appeared. The twelve articles ran, sequentially and monthly, starting with the October, 2009 issue of the magazine, and progressing to the September 2010 issue. From the HTML version of the magazine, you can print out each installment of the series, until you have all 12 parts printed out. Doing it this way will enable you to have the articles printed in a portrait orientation.
You, dougmack, seem like a well-versed and bright individual. If you would ever like to join the group of volunteers who put out the magazine monthly, as well as contribute to additional special editions in the future, we would welcome you with open arms.
Sincerely,
Paul Arnote [parnote] PCLinuxOS Magazine Chief Editor
