Over the past few months I have noticed a repetitive theme that needs to be put to rest so that disruption that happens each time it is mentioned is prevented.
To put it simply
KDE4 is not KDE3.5.x , KDE3 is dead, KDE4 is here to stay, get over it and get to grips with the new environment and learn how to make it work for you.
A longer explanation
KDE4 is a completely new environment started from scratch using 'new technology' and is in very active development, and in the early days of development things can change.
KDE3.x.x was laid to rest by its developers as they realized that the underlying 'technology' and code would not stand up against what was to come, may it rest easy
Yes, the KDE3 base code has been picked up and made into the Trinity DE although this will be effectively a static desktop environment, with the work being done is to 'patch' it into X on a modern system, they will need an API (a transitional layer of code) for Qt4 apps to work and will have to address the fact that modern apps tend to use DBUS as apposed to the DCOP system that Trinity maintains the use of..
Your options
Should you not like KDE4 then unfortunately KDE is no longer the DE for you, try it with compositing and effects switched off if you still do not like it then it is time to try an alternate environment, I would suggest LXDE as this is possibly the most 'KDE3 like' in many ways,
If you have an existing KDE4 install that you don't like, then use Synaptic to bring the install up to date and then choose task-lxde when you next boot up choose the 'session' setting and change your session to LXDE.
Of course there are other options XFCE,WM, Gnome and a myriad of other window managers.
a note of caution
Gnome in itself is about to undergo a huge change - the Gnome 3 base is significantly different from the Gnome 2.x series in ways similar to the KDE3/KDE4 change, if you are not keen on change or relearning a new environment wt the same name I would suggest XFCE.

I welcome responses to my notes above, but be aware, this thread signifies a change to what has gone before, if a discussion turns to comments of KDE4 does not work the same as KDE3 the answer will be - no it does not, if any flames start up the moderation team will quash those fires by removing any offending posts.
Thanks for your time

I throw my shoe at KDE 3! I know, wouldn't throw a good Texas boot at KDE3, only a worn out, dragged behind a Texas wedding pickup truck shoe, that tore loose from the frayed baling twine as it drove by. Recycling at it's finest.

"KDE4 is not KDE3.5.x , KDE3 is dead, KDE4 is here to stay" kde3 is dead?!?! when?! how?!? why??? "get over it and get to grips with the new environment and learn how to make it work for you" that is the right approach, in fact it is so easy to do, hard to believe that kde4 does the same as kde3 did after i configured it(many hours doing it and breaking kde3, yes, i broke it many times) "I know, wouldn't throw a good Texas boot at KDE3, only a worn out, dragged behind a Texas wedding pickup truck shoe" old enough for you? no? maybe this one?

Resistance is futile. Assimilation is inevitable. Thank goodness someone finally came right out and said so - again.
