Seems I've missed a setting or two because after installing AWN or Cairo Dock, I can't drag & drop icons from the menu to anywhere. Someone care to enlighten me. This is a fresh install of 2010-7.

Have you unlocked the widgets on the panel?

Are you, perchance, running Gnome?

Nope. KDE Have you unlocked the widgets on the panel?
As far as I can tell, everything says "Lock widgets" so I'm assuming they are unlocked. have you checked the settings of each, they both have settings section, in two different places, and whats wrong with doing it manually if you really need it, since the screen size is limited anyway
Yup. But, I'll recheck. Nothing "wrong" doing it manually. It's just a WHOLE lot easier with D&D.

I don't use Awn or Cairo - don't suppose the desktop needs restarting after being installed?

I've rebooted a couple of times.

I'm running Cairo Dock and I haven't really been able to drag and drop icons onto it since I switched to KDE4 ten or eleven months ago. It actually worked at first, but erratically. And then, after some upgrade, it stopped working.
But that's not surprising though as you can't drag and drop them to a KDE panel either. On the other hand, setting them up manually isn't that hard.

I just installed cairo dock with no issues, and yes, I drag and drop the program icons I want to use. However, you must be using the kick off style menu, you can't drag from the classic menu. Also be sure in cairo dock config menu you don't have the dock locked. I spent way more time then I would like to admit to getting cairo dock set up the way I wanted. However, it working great and I really like it. Once you get the hang of setting it up it really very nice to work with.

Thank you, Bullitt, Now I finally understand why drag and drop stopped working. It wasn't the upgrade in itself; it was simply because I or the upgrade changed the menu style. And with the Kickoff menu you can also drag apps to the desktop and the KDE panel! This tip should be a sticky.
