I suspect this thread might be in the wrong forum but...

Have tried umpteen times to upgrade clean install of both 2010 and 2010.7 but meet with the same problems each time.

Step 1 Install PCLos

Step 2 Set up internet connection.

Step 3 Launch SPM, check default repo (heanet) and reload.

Step 4 Click on Mark all Upgrades and take the default offers.

Step 5 Download process begins (667/551 files depending on version).  All goes smoothly.  No error observed or reported.

Step 6  Installation completes with no errors except a Package Manager Output is generated (see below).

Step 7 Reboot

Step 8 Launch (shiny new) Configure Your Computer>Workspace Appearance & Behaviour>Desktop Effects  + Enable + Apply

Boom!  kwin crashes and Crash Reporting "Assistant" begins (twice).  Do you know what you were doing? Yes!  (Having been here many times before, Step 6.5 install gdb).

This report does not contain enough information...

What am I doing wrong (apart from trying to upgrade)?

The clue is right here:
Quote
Step 8 Launch (shiny new) Configure Your Computer>Workspace Appearance & Behaviour>Desktop Effects  + Enable + Apply

Boom!  kwin crashes

If your stuff crashes when you have Desktop Effects enabled, it is likely that your graphics card isn't correctly set up. I can't see which one you have from here, but I would recommend going into the PCLinuxOS Control Center and seeing if there is a proprietary driver available for your card (Hardware>Set up graphical server) and use it if available.

Except that effects are fine until I upgrade.

[Intel Mobile 4 (gma4500M I think) on Toshiba Satellite L350-170.  Intel 810 and later driver.

Would there be any mileage in changing repo from heanet to pclosusers (say)?

Compositing crashes desktop

If you have an Intel-based graphics chipset you will find that anytime you enable compositing with KDE 4.5 your desktop is going to crash. This is because the Blur plugin does not yet support Intel chipsets. You can resolve this issue by simply disabling the Blur plugin. To do this follow these steps:

Click on Start > Computer > System Settings
Go to Workspace Appearance and Behavior >  Desktop Effects > All Effects
Uncheck Blur
Enable or start compositing
Now you shouldn’t have any issue with compositing crashing your desktop.

Thank you Joble.  A very useful reply and link.

At the moment, because of the apparent instability described, I've done a clean install so will pluck up courage to try the upgrades again and apply the suggested tweak.

I'll let you know...

Suggested strategy seems to have resolved that problem.

Should emphasize Enable Desktop Effects then uncheck Blur then Apply  (ie Desktop Effects has to be checked before Blur can be unckecked so don't Apply until both have been done!).
