Hi to all,
I installed 2010.07 on this Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H system.[sata3 +USB3]
All worked well after many reboots. I setup shared hard disks and burnt a livecd of the working system, about 780Mbytes.
I then did an upgrade., some 800 files.
Now when I reboot the system stops dead after the line saying.....Trying to use devtmpfs (ignore errors)
The system now appears dead in the water.
Your thoughts on this subject greatfully received.

Hi genomega,
I found the problem---ACPI
However I found another problem...
This system has 16GB ram so I installed the PAE kernel.
This has led to some strange anomilies. The default grub boot crashes , but if I select the 1010.07
boot file , some 2 or 3 below the default boot,(just below the 2010.nfb) it boots fine. I still have 16GB of ram, as shown by gkrellm, and the system boots very fast. So, I do not know what the real problem was/is but  I am working again. I have set the current kernel to be the primary boot kernel, and rebooted. It all worked fine. I have done some upgrades and that is also working.
By the way, when the system locked up at the devtmpfs message there was no KB or Mouse..
Many thanks for coming back.
