I'm really just a noob here, but I have had a very successful install of the ZenMini on a Dell D600 laptop, every thing worked straight off beyond my expectations. I have only one problem I can't connect to the internet, I'm using a Motorola SB5101 modem (ethernet connection). are there any drivers or anything I need to install, and how would I install them. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

do you connect it to your computer through a usb cable?

turn it off or unplug it from your computer, wait for 5 seconds and then plug it in or turn it on

wait for around 10 seconds and then open the terminal, type su and enter root's password when asked and then enter these commands and paste their output here

ifconfig

cat /var/log/syslog | tail -n 100

I use an ethernet cable. Is it possible to use it or will I have to get a usb cable?

Thanks.

Welcome to Forum, you have no doubt found out there is an enormous amount of information and help to be found here. Very active too.

I have just tried Zen-Mini on two Dell D610 they installed fine too, surprisingly

Just to clarify:
MiniZen installed fine all works. Then you connect via ethernet cable to your modem?
Does your modem actually work, may seem a silly question but still you have not told, I don't mean if you have powered it up.  Have you studied the indicator patterns etc?

Are using the modem to post this to forum? [via another OS] Important too are you using the same cable you will be using on the Dell 600?

You may be a new comer here and to Linux, but you could be an IT specialist, this would make a difference to our repsonses.

Last no you should not have to do anything apart from getting your connection details set up correctly?

This will be looked at when you have answered muungwana's questions.

Just saw your answer, ethernet cable is the best to start with.

If you connect the modem to the computer through an wired ethernet cable, then the problem could be with ethernet card driver on your linux box. Ethernet cards are pretty standard and they usually work out of the box.

Do you have linux and windows on  the same computer and it works on windows but not in linux? how is your network setup? not posting output of commands from my first post does not eliminate any possible reasons why its not working

your computer has two ethernet cards? why do you have two? make sure only one is connected and try again. Two network cards show up on "ifconfig" and hence there are no problems on your computer.

DHCP requests are not being answered and that is why you cant go online, the network is not giving your linux box and ip address when it ask for one. The problem is not the linux box, it is your network. The computer responsible for giving ip addresses on your network is not giving one to your linux box.

How many computers do you have on your network? what is your local network set up? try to disconnect your windows computer and then unplug the cable from the linux box and plug it back in and try again and rerun the "ifconfig" command.

"ifconfig" will have something like this when things work, the line in red shows the interface has an ip address and part of the network. This is what is missing on your current set up

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:C0:A8:84:ED:AE
          inet addr:192.168.100.20  Bcast:192.168.100.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

I'm trying to connect the computer to the internet by itself, I only have one computer connected at a time, I don't have any other computers on a network, just one connectiion and I have been unplugging one computer and plugging in another with the same cable.

I really have no Idea why I have two ethernet cards, I thought one was for ethernet and one for wireless, how can I disconnect one if I have to. I do know that this laptop has been connected to the internet as recently as last week with a windows xp install.

Thanks.

wireless interfaces usually have "wlan" in their names, yours is getting "eth1" for some reason. This could be a problem but it is for another thread since we are dealing with a wired connection here and that is eth0 interface

Quote
Sep 26 01:43:57 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 10
Sep 26 01:44:07 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 15
Sep 26 01:44:22 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 12
Sep 26 01:44:34 localhost dhclient: No DHCPOFFERS received.

i will put my money on the above log entry. "eth0" is the active interface here and  is the one asking for an ip address and your network is the one not giving it one.

While the cable is on this computer, turn the modem off, wait for around ten seconds and then turn it on and rerun the command and look for those "DHCPDISCOVER" log entries, see any difference? if not and you still cant go online, unplug the cable, turn the modem off, wait for ten seconds and then turn it on, wait for ten seconds and then plug in the cable to your linux box and try again

you can turn the modem off by unplugging it from the electric outlet.

i am glad you manage to connect to the internet with your linux system.

you might want to modify your post and mask your ip address. It is an ip address that exists in an open internet and somebody may look it up and have an idea of where you live or bombard your computer with malicious traffic.

Having a public ip address also means your modem is only a modem, it does not have a router in it and hence you cant have more than one computer accessing the internet at the same time and what just happened also suggests you will have to restart your modem everytime you want to use it with another computer.

I hope your windows system has a firewall up, you should set one up on your linux box too. You cant be too careful. Your computer is facing the open web and i am sure at least on person out there has hit your computer since you have connected it.

If you are happy with the outcome of this thread, can you modify the heading of your thread and add "solved" to it? you can do that by clicking modify button and then change the title of the post

you can visit this web page to check if you have a running firewall or not: https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
