I am aware that this is a question regarding Gnome.  However, I posted quite a while ago in the PCLOS Gnome forum for help-- to no avail.  So here I am.

I just installed PCLinuxOS Gnome this morning on my hdd. I opened and reloaded Synaptic, marked all upgrades, and applied the changes. Upon rebooting, I received some message about the X server not being able to start. I stupidly shrugged this off as an artifact of the upgrade and hoped that a simple reboot would fix the problem.

Upon logging in, I was greeted with this message:

No Exec line in the session file: 02GNOME.
Running the GNOME failsafe session instead

I figured that I had somehow removed some Gnome libs, so I fired up Synaptic, only to find that it froze upon doing so. I headed over to the terminal to do a search with apt, but apt "freezes" as well.

I'm stuck.   Embarrassed

Your last hope now is gnome terminal.
Become root then type:

apt-get update

apt-get -s upgrade

This last command will simulate the packages that will be updated, or warn of errors.
If all looks good remove the -s

apt-get upgrade

And see if that solves your problem.

AFAIK the guys tried to help:

but you left them with nothing. Why?

As a basic rule, if you're uninstalling a package and it wants to take a lot of packages with it, take a minute and check the list very carefully. This will also help you.

We do not use the apt-get upgrade command here, it will break your installation. The proper command, as root, is;

# apt-get dist-upgrade

This will however probably not work, as the symptoms indicate the rpm database has become corrupted. To correct this, do the following commands as root;

# rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*

# rpm -vv --rebuilddb

after which Synaptic and apt-get should again work properly.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?
