In theory, theory=practice, in practice ???

« on: September 08, 2010, 08:42:44 PM »

Hello,

Tried to download the PCL magazine this evening.  Can't get the whole file or just open it
in the PDF reader.  Most of the file is missing although the file size is correct.  Am able to
use Synaptic however.   I wonder what gives.

Any suggestions ?

thanks,

patrick013

Same here.  But the on-line version works well.

Hi there,

Just hooked up my wireless gateway but am using the wifi mode not the fast ethernet.
I'm not the only one with aforementioned then.  Thought it might be a browser switch
or something.   Everything usually works OK on my other internet sources.  Took three
technicians on the phone to get this working today full-time.   So far so good.

thanks for the response,

patrick

Sorry guys, but I'm not trying to be "contrary" here. Every time someone says they are having difficulty downloading the PDF for the Sept 2010 issue, I go check it out and try it myself (using Firefox), over my home wireless connection. Every time, it successfully downloads. (I must have 20 flipping copies scattered around my hard drive by now, some that I won't find again for months).

Just for grins, try these links:

http://pclosmag.com/index.php/latest-mag/22-september-2010-issue-of-the-new-pclinuxos-magazine/download

http://pclosmag.com/pdf/2010-09.pdf

If either of those is unsuccessful for you, you can always try YouCanToo's unofficial mirror of the PCLinuxOS Magazine site.

If THAT doesn't work for you, you can always read the HTML version of the magazine.

The September 2010 issue is the largest PDF that the PCLinuxOS Magazine staff has EVER produced (16.5 MB). Perhaps this may be causing some problems for some folks. I cannot ascertain if this is the issue or not, since I am unable to duplicate any of the reported issues. I hope this helps you resolve any issues you may be having.

Sorry to keep you waiting.   I think I've got it all.   The whole file.

I'm trying to run 1gb of RAM without a swap file and...every 2 or 3 pages takes
5 or 10 seconds to load up.  Once or twice tho I only got part of the file on download.

I think solved is OK.

thank you.

parnote:

From your first link to the download I got a 4.3 MB broken file the first try, and a 5.7 MB broken file the second try. The second (short link) I got a full 16.5 MB file that works as expected for all pages.

Thanks for that report, O-P.

I tried both links before posting them, and both performed flawlessly. I mentioned it to Meemaw on the mag's IRC channel, and both worked flawlessly for her, as well. I am unable to replicate the problem.

That's the fastest download, and got a perfect copy. Cheesy

Tried parnote's first link again, and it stalled at 8.6 MB this time. Angry

I tried every link that I could think of and every one here and all would not work. Then I tried Tex's link and it worked.

Thank you Tex.

When old-polack has mentioned the difficulty,I need not repeat, but besides having this difficulty since 4 to 6 months ,this time I found that the link at "Distrowatch.com" is not working at all.Since 5 days, clicking the link displays a window stating
"Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (ihttp) isn't associated with any program."
Is something wrong with my settings?

There is nothing wrong with your settings.  There is no such thing as iHTTP  remove the i from the url and it might work.
