If anyone wants to assist with this, I will be happy to post whatever technical details required on reply.....not sure where to go with this one.........but very similar troubles to http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,73657.0.html which really didn't answer anything for me, but here for reference since that was closed as solved.

Strange problem I have on my clean, repo updated PCLOS2010......when installing the new kernel 2.6.33.7 from the stable repos, have this problem of USB automounting only working once, then have to basically reboot to reset the modules, kernel, etc. or all usb stuff won't mount manually........it looked like a problem with usb modules not being found, so `modprobe` and get "insmod, unable to install module....blah blah" ...like when you are trying to insmod a module that is the wrong kernel version..... Undecided

I have seen a similar issue mounting a USB flash drive. Works once then after this nothing. I found that the haldaemon was stopped, or when pressing stop you get a failed message. Starting it again from the control centre solved the problem. I was then able to plug the flash drive in all day long without problems.
