Run Terminal.  Application Launcher -> More Applications -> Terminals -> Terminal

Login as root

$ su

input your root password

and then run alsaconf

# alsaconf

Simply accept everything (but you have to choose your soundcard!).

Reboot.

After reboot, then you might want to try install AlsaMixerGUI from Synaptic so that you can adjust your sound mixer settings.  Make sure that PCM or Master are turned up.  Sometimes, the default settings are set to mute or to something too low to be audible for humans. Smiley

I hope this helps.

I have sound if I plug speakers into the pc.
the speakers that are built into the keyboard are silent.
any suggestions, I only noticed this today because I shut down to restart and had put headphones in the speaker socket and heard the shut down theme for PClinuxOS so things are on the improve. would like to get the key board ones working if i could.

I have this problem with my new laptop, a Sony.

I had to download and install the newest Alsa from their home page.

were you able to get the laptop speakers to work?

I found some info on the web that may be relavent however it is way past my limited linux understanding,

This is an extract that I think is relavent to my problem, can I have some advice on how to do this type of change.

"No Sound with Onboard Intel Sound Card

There may be an issue with two conflicting modules loaded, namely snd_intel8x0 and snd_intel8x0m. In this case, edit rc.conf and in the MODULES array blacklist the latter one so that it reads !snd_intel8x0m afterwards.

Muting the "External Amplifier" in alsamixer or amixer may also help. See the ALSA wiki.

With Intel Corporation 82801 I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller on laptop, you may need to add this line to

/etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

or

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop enable=1 index=0

Otherwise, the pcspkr may not work, and only the headphone have sound. "

I could not get this to make any difference.
I have noticed in ALSAMIXER that one of the icons has no volume adjustments its called IEC958. It has a small speaker shaped icon at th bottom of the wind but no way of adjusting , all the others are adjustable.

cam2000,
Did you try to drag a missing icon from Available Channels...  to Visible Channels
in Kmix> Settings> Configure Channels
then set volume??

Greetings,

I posted a similar problem here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,78827.0.html

But never got a reply for a Compaq cq62.

Originally I had the laptop and its speakers working and do not remember any particular sound problems as I was working on getting the wifi to work.
I had even been running chromium browser to see the html5video demo with good sound.

When delivering the laptop, I had the headphones ok speakers silent problem. Ran alsaconf, poked around settings, noting there was no 'speaker' icon to drag as in other machines.

Later the owner called to say the speakers came on fuil blast when booted in a library.

When she got home, the speakers were silent again.

Good luck

Thanks Steve,
I have done this, however, they all move to the right side, none left in the table on the available channels.
When I have done this they show up on the mixer but there are no volume controls on one of the  channels, it did not have all the options that are on the image you have pasted.
The laptop speakers work in windows7 so I know they are OK.
This has got me stumped, getting frustrated with not being able to get it going.
